the latest trains magazine(May ) is the tourist special . it has many ads for hotels and other accomdation that is close to the rails .

The Holiday Inn in Cumberland is a place I've stayed in the past. On several trips out, I passed the time on a cold winter's night watching the trains out of the window of my room while listening to the scanner and having a few drinks.
Best Western Convention Center, 522 West 38th Street, NYC. If your on the side facing the Lincoln Tunnel exit, you should see movement below street level. Not a bad little hotel either.
