AAPRCO 2011 Convention and KCS

The American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners Inc. (AAPRCO) is planning to hold their 34th annual convention at Kansas City Union Station on October 20-22, 2011. Convention plans include an Amtrak special train, primarily on KCS, for a four day one way trip from New Orleans to Kansas City.

Since about one-half to two-thirds of AAPRCO members usually sell some space on their cars for their annual convention trip, this may be an opportunity to enjoy some rare mileage on KCS.

Depending on how much of the KCUS trackage is leased for summer storage, there is about 1800 feet of terminal parking space. Now, the past several years, the Bartons have brought their fleet from Arizona to Kansas City for a summertime base of operations, and Patrick Henry has also brought his fleet to summer base in KC.

In addition, there is an ex-MILW Pullman, in poor condition, that has been stored on the house tracks for going on 5 years now. It may be part of the fleet which became the instant railroad museum for KCUS. Further, ex-ATSF business car CHICO has a semi-permanent lease on the house tracks. Finally, there is a new car this season: TALL GRASS (IIRC the name), is a somewhat modernized HW observation. The glazing is modern, and the last time I was down at Union Station there was evidence of interior renovation.

Kansas City Union Station will be very glad for the money, though! It's struggling economically.
