Growth of the KCS

since kcs has been operating since the late 1800's and they are the second oldest class 1 railroad, why is it that kcs is the smallest class 1 railroad?
by this I mean why havent they grown since the past, do they just want to stay in a certain area, or what?

While the KCS growth in the US has been modest, same can hardly be said of their growth within Mexico and the Republic of Panama.

Most of the lines that comprised the state owned NdeM, Nacionales of Mexico are now Kansas City Southern Mexico.

I think the shortest answer is easy: they haven't been involved in a major merger along the way. Their absorption of the MidSouth lines pales in comparison to the consolidation the other class 1s have undergone in the last 20 years or so to reach their present size.
