The Maori name "Tangiwai" means funeral waters, Tangi been Funeral , Wai been water.
This remains New Zealand's second biggest transport disaster , only surpassed by the Mt Erebus plane crash.

The aircraft ground proximity warning sounded six seconds before the plane hit Mount Erebus. I suppose that is normal under these circumstances.
