I have travelled in these trains in several areas, though mainly in the north of England. I don't like them. They can be very crowded - which means the trains are actually too short. They were designed and built for British Rail, mainly because they were not so expensive as "proper" trains. They did enable services to continue on mainly rural lines, and replaced worn out trains. I don't think they are actually dangerous, just not very comfortable. A few have been sold abroad to countries like Bulgaria.

The prototype was actually a Leyland bus body on a rail chassis. They were designed to be a cheap railcar for branch lines.
