The narrow gauge line is being replaced by a Broad Gauge line. There has been a TV film about the last days of the narrow gauge line, which was getting by with a single train and a single operable loco with horrifying problems. The film gave the impression that track defects were constantly resulting in usually harmless derailments. The staff were making do with track repairs and maintenance of the loco. Fares were extremely low.

The travellers were almost all local people, with some longer distance people travelling to religious centres. Presumably the Broad Gauge lines will have longer distance trains giving direct connections to larger cities in India.

There is some sign of railway building in Nepal. It is quite possible that the new line will eventually be extended to the capital.
