Nigeria's adoption of Standard gauge for new lines is an important step towards the adoption of this more efficient track gauge in Africa. This new line is an important development for the capital Abuja, which since its designation in the centre of the country has lacked rail transport. The Cape gauge lines built by the British have been rather slow and are in need of extensive rehabilitation, like most of the colonial railways in Africa.

The writer has travelled by train from Kano to Kaduna and from the airport in Lagos to a place in the bush where the train came to a stop due to track problems.

The British failed to build a coastal rail line, and perhaps the lack of easy travel on this route was a factor in the attempted break-up of the country when the former eastern region tried to secede as Biafra. This very busy route has been an obvious site for a rail route since colonial times.
