I will be headed out to SLC for a few days in mid-June and hope to get a few hours, either AM or PM to do some railfanning. I'm not sure yet what part of town I'll be staying in but am looking for advice on good places to railfan. I should have access to a car and a GPS.

I know there is some commuter operations as well as Amtrak and light rail. My preference would be for for freight but I'm open to suggestions. I'll only have a few hours one or twice during my stay so I don't want to spend it all driving out of town to a location I can only spend a few minutes at.

Can anyone help?

Well I ended up with light rail and walking and wound up just behind the former UP station at Grant tower, CP C783

Here are a few from the area:

A UTA commuter run headed out for Ogden.

A UP chemical train. Anyone know a train number?

And here's one of the former UP Station.

Kilroy, if you return to Utah you should definitely check out the Ogden Union Station. You can take FrontRunner (commuter rail) from SLC to Ogden. The Union Station has a train museum and a model train exhibit that recreates the western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad. There are also several other museums there.

If you have more time to spend then Promintory Point is historically interesting. Of course no train traffic here anymore. The original Lucin Trestle is interesting and may be able to see freight traffic on the causeway that crosses the Great Salt Lake.

I'll take some pictures next time I go up there.
