I know little about TRE; I've visited their website, but otherwise I don't know much. Can anybody shed some light? Such as, do they use the RDCs still?

TRE uses rebuilt RDCs on some runs, uses F59PHs and new bi-level coaches on others. I'm not sure about equipment assignments, but I'm fairly certain the RDCs still run. They have been completely refurbished and ride great. The bi-levels are a good ride, too.

Do a search for "Trinity Railway Express" and I'm sure photos will turn up…like this one

When I was up in Dallas last Spring, the Budds were still running

I would imagine you'd see them at any station during rush hour.

TRE still uses the Budd built RDCs, mostly in Dallas County between Union Station and Centerpoint (DFW). If DCTA opens when scheduled, 10 of DART's 13 Budd RDCs will be running for DCTA until their new Stadler GTWs come on line.
DART(TRE) maintains their 13 Budd RDCs in excellent shape. They are approaching the time for major maintenance overhaul. It'll be interesting to see if they will be overhauled before or after DCTA uses them.

Present TRE equipment roster:
13 ex-Via RDC-1s
DART purchased 13 RDC-1s from VIA Rail Canada in 1993 for TRE service. The RDCs were completely stripped down to their stainless steel shell and remanufactured by GEC Alsthom Transport, Inc. at their Montreal facility. All new interiors were provided, including new seats, floors, ceilings, walls, windows, and lighting. The makeover took 20 months, average costs was $1.8 million.

17 Bi-Levels
2 ex-Go Bi-Level Coaches with Cabs (built 1976 thru 1977, rebuilt by Amtrak 2000 thru 2001)
10 ex-Go Bi-Level Coaches (built 1976 thru 1977, rebuilt by Amtrak 2000 thru 2001)
5 new Bi-Level Coaches with Cabs (built in 2000 and 2003)

6 Locos
4 ex-Go F-59PH (built in 1994, Amtrak installed Cab HVAC, repainted car bodies, and converted HEP to 480V U.S. style in 2000)
2 new F-59PHI (built in 2001)

This year, TRE has bought 3 more used F-59PH locos from Go, and ordered 4 more new Bi-Level coaches. I'm not sure when the newly purchased equipment will become operational at TRE. TRE will also start refurbishing all their ex-Go equipment as this new equipment becomes available.

Updates for TRE roster:

13 ex-Via RDC-1s
DART purchased 13 RDCs from VIA Rail Canada in 1993. The Budd Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania originally built the RDCs in the 1950’s. They were used by VIA Rail throughout Canada in intercity service.
The RDCs were completely stripped down to their stainless steel shell and remanufactured by GEC Alsthom Transport, Inc. at their Montreal facility. All new interiors were provided, including new seats, floors, ceilings, walls, windows, and lighting.
Budd RDC Specifications:
Each RDC has 92 passenger seats plus 4 mobility impaired areas. Wheelchair access is through a manually deployed bridgeplate from the side doors to a "high block" on the station platform. Each car is 85 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 14 feet high. Empty, each car weights 135,000 pounds. Its design speed is 85 mph, but travels at a maximum speed of 60 mph while in service. Each car has 2 doors on each side.
The RDCs are powered by 2 diesel engines, each generating 300 horsepower. Each car has dual cabs to allow bi-directional operation just like DART's light rail vehicles

Thanks for the updated roster information. This has raised a few questions though.
Have any of the F59PH locomotives left the property for overhaul yet?
Have any of the overhauled and renumbered locomotives returned?

I am visiting Dallas/Fort Worth in early May 2010 and have been trying to work out the equipment cycles. From what I can see, there is a requirement for six sets of equipment. Five of these are locomotive hauled and one is the Budd RDC's making a round trip from Richland Hills to Dallas Union and back to Centerport/DFW. Can anyone confirm this and does anyone have the complete equipment cycles and locomotive turns for TRE services.

Thanks in advance.

UKrailfan.

Yes, some F59PH locomotives have left for refurbishment, I'm not sure if any have returned to service.
I can't confirm equipment cycles. What I've read before is that the TRE really didn't have any spare F59 locomotives before purchasing 3 more last year from Go. Since they had 6 F59 locomotives before, that mean they had to have 6 F59 power trains in the cycle before. The TRE has always had the luxury of using the RDC fleet for backing up the Bombardier fleet.

Later this year, that's about to change with DCTA leasing 10 of the 13 RDCs for the new A-Train service, which might explain why the TRE purchased 3 more F59 locomotives from Go....

Can anyone tell me which ones have gone for refurbishment, please. Also does anyone know what new number allocation will be ie. will 565 be 120 etc.?

A previous visit by a like minded railfan from the UK showed a daily requirement for 5 locos plus a maintenance spare. Since then the timetable has changed but I can still only see a need for 5 locos. Hopefully someone will have the information I am looking for.

Thanks Electricron for your help.

Some more information from TRE about locomotive overhauls.
F-59 PH Locomotives

Originally GO Transit unit GO Road numbers: 525, 527, 528 (purchased 2009), 565 thru 568 (purchased 1999)

565-568 Refurbished by Amtrak at Beach Grove with Cab HVAC, repainted car bodies, and converted HEP to US standard 480v HEP. First used in service at TRE late 2000. Overhaul project underway at RELCO in Albia, IA. Rebuild included up-grading to EPA TIER-II compliance. Once overhaul is completed road numbers will be 123-126.

525, 527, 528 In overhaul at TTI (Norfolk Southern) in Altoona, PA. Overhaul includes repainted carbodies, conversion to US standard 480v HEP, up-grading to EPA Tier II compliance. Once overhaul is completed TRE road numbers assigned will be 120-122.

F-59 PHI Locomotives
Purchased new from EMD, some electrical, and pre-delivery work done by Alsthom. First used by TRE in 2001. Road numbers: 569 & 570

Just wanted to add that the 569 and 570 will be repainted with the overhaul contract for 525, 527, 528 (120, 121, 122) soon, but these two will not be overhauled. I'm not sure if these two will be renumbered or not.
As for determining when each locomotive's overhaul has been completed, just check recent photos or videos. The easiest way to determined if an overhaul has been completed is to look at their assigned numbers.

Ever wanted to know how much money it costs to run a commuter train?
Well, that question was answered at the latest TRE Board Meeting in March.
Here's the minutes link
http://www.dart.org/about/board/boardag ... 2TREAC.pdf
Here's the answer.
Mr. Danish asked what the cost per train is? Ms. Navarro stated that the cost of one train going across the corridor in one direction is $100, if it is a one car train. A locomotive, coach and cab would be $300 to go one direction. To be more precise, TRE average direct cost of operation is $136 per car hour.
TRE uses F59PH diesel locomotives and Bombardier Bilevel coach cars. The corridor length is 34 miles.

I realize the operation conditions and fuel prices for TRE isn't the same as in your area, but maybe this data can give a rough estimate for commuter trains in your area.
