Don't know about the US, but overnight on the long-distance trains like the Canadian, there's only 3 people who have to be awake. 2 loco engineers, and 1 attendant. They've had 700+ passengers aboard, 32 cars.

in US a Engineer and Cdr is only requirement , the trainman are a contract negotiated item , with many different rules on different railroads.

Where and what is the minimum crew size for a passenger train in the US, and any FRA citations would be great. (This also includes conductor).
@Mark0f0 - Agreed but it could also change due to the route and employee availability. They all use scheduling software for a reason now so in case anyone decides to not show up, it won't effect the departure time.
