The neat Main Street Trolley line in Memphis has suspended operation for at least three months and probably longer following two recent car fires. The classic equipment fleet (mostly ex Melbourne and Lisbon trams with one car from Brazil and one Gomaco replica Birney) apparently needs a major overhaul or possible replacement.

I've been deferring my next blues-listening trip to Memphis in the hope that the Main Street Trolley operation would be back up and running by this spring, but it won't be. In fact at this point there seems to be no definite timetable for restoring operations following last year's unfortunate combustions of two of the system's ex-Melbourne trams, fire that were linked to poor maintenance. it's sad, especially for the businesses that rely on the heritage streetcars to bring customers to the Main Street neighborhood.

The way things are going they could probably take Washington's modern cars - at least they might get used in service there. Alternatively (opens windows so I can hear enthusiast screams) Memphis could acquire and regauge PCCs 4500 and 4549 from here in Toronto :)
