^Groveland, no. There's nothing in Groveland except where the G&W switches from the exDL&W main to the original D&MM.

I think you are confused. lol

All trains operate out of the Brooks Ave yard. To the mine and back.

The other road train operates to Silver Springs (currently at night) and back.

^I've never heard anyone refer to the mine as Groveland. First time. It's usually Mt. Morris or Hamton Corners.

Sorry, Matt!

Is there anything left at Groveland? I remember back in the 80s there were a few buildings. I should have taken a picture when I was there!

1) The recent articles on the extension of the siding list it all as Town of Groveland.

2) The buildings are gone last I heard. I think the inspection pit in the engine house foundation are there.

how is the rock salt business.

report from boatnerd website:

Prepping for winter: Road salt coming from Venezuela, Morocco, Egypt

11/10 - Milwaukee, Wis. – The Port of Milwaukee is especially busy this time of year with hundreds of trucks loading up on salt and moving out — they’re gearing up for winter.

Just over 2 million tons of salt were brought into the Port of Milwaukee last year, it expects the same this year. Now, typically the salt comes from the Great Lakes salt mines. But this year, salt is coming from places much farther away.

“I think everyone, landscapers, municipalities and others they want to make sure they have enough salt. That’s why this ship is here today,” said Jeff Fleming, Port of Milwaukee.

A ship that’s holding 20,000 tons of salt. Ordinarily the salt used to melt ice form our roads and parking lots come from mines all around the Great Lakes.

“But this season at the Port of Milwaukee we’ve seen salt from Venezuela, from Morocco, and we’re expecting salt from Egypt,” said Fleming.

Matt Ryan, President of MCR, a landscaping and snow removal company, typically buys his salt from local companies but with last year’s harsh winter, supplies are down so Matt had to look elsewhere.

“Because their reserves were depleted last year, the only opportunity we had was to go overseas. And we were lucky enough to find two different areas where we could pull salt from,” said Matt.

One ship took several weeks to arrive, and it will take 7 days to unload.

“What we wanted to do is help the economy, stimulate the economy and get a bunch of the local guys salt that they may not have had otherwise,” said Matt.

MCR is bringing in a second ship with another 20,000 tons of salt. That ship is coming from Egypt. It is expected to arrive November 29th and will take 7 days to unload.

Just as a side note, I saw a couple of MOW high-rails and their crews about a half mile west (south) of Garbutt this afternoon. Looked like they were replacing at least one tie.

So here is something interesting about the original G&W railroad and its relationship to the R&S. (or vice-versa)
For the past decade, the general railfan consensus has been something like this:

"The original G&W railroad, Caledonia to Retsof NY, ceased to exist as the G&W around the year 2002, and was absorbed into the R&S system.
The Genesee & Wyoming railroad name was then transferred (for reasons unknown) to a G&W railroad in Australia"

It is a fact that one of the G&W lines in Australia does now letter all its locomotives as "Genesee & Wyoming"
https://www.flickr.com/photos/maikhaly/8436598671/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
why the G&W name was "given" to a line in Australia I haven't a clue..makes no sense to me, but it happened!
G&W corp. has their reasons, whatever they may be.

So we have all believed that technically there is no longer any Genesee & Wyoming shortline in western NY, its all now under the R&S system,
and it has been believed that all the former G&W locomotives are now tecnhically R&S locomotives, and will probably eventually be re-lettered for the R&S.

This is the theory I have written on my G&W page, everyone assumes its true.

everyone with me so far? ;)

Here is the interesting and unexpected bit..
Since 2002, we have *not* actually seen any former G&W locos re-lettered for the R&S! it has not happened.
they all still have their G&W logos and numbers..

And! a few weeks ago I was driving down route 390 past the Mount Morris (Hampton Corners) salt mine..
I glanced over at the mine tracks to look at the SW1001's that are always there..
only one was there that day, and it appears to have been repainted! very fresh looking paint..
(I think it was No. 1001, but I only got a quick look, and no photos)
and! It clearly has a G&W logo repainted on the side! not R&S! huh??

So..Is the G&W still running in NY state after all?? (probably not..)
But what else would explain an apparently new G&W logo applied in 2014?

thoughts?

The official corporate website only shows R&S, and has no listing for GNWR.

http://gwrr.com/operations/railroads/no ... n_railroad" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's good enough for me.

Well, reporting marks have little to do with actual railroads. G&W headquarters still uses the GNWR reporting mark and can place it on anything. Doesn't mean the railroad exists. Union Pacific uses UPY for yard power. There is no Union Pacific Yard Railroad.

For what it's worth (which is probably "not much")...

The January 2011 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register still has an entry for the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad Company, showing reporting marks GNWR, 47.10 miles of road operated and more than 2000 cars.

The Dansville and Mount Morris is also listed with DMM reporting marks, 9 miles of road operated and 429 freight cars.

The Rochester and Southern's listing is the shortest: no equipment listed, four interchange points (B&P, CSX, D&H at Silver Springs and NS) and not with the G&W even though the G&W shows an interchange point at P&L Junction with the R&S in its listing. Go figure.

I don't have any newer ORERs than the January 2011. Still looking for one, though.

No problem, my friend. The mine is geographically in the Town of Groveland. I do appreciate your assistance- I think I might be headed to Behan Road tomorrow morning.

The turn to Groveland returned to the Brooks Ave Yard early on Friday afternoon. I had been parked at Behan Road since 9 AM on Friday morning, so I suspect the train elft earlier than usual.
