I'm thinking of making a donation, what are the odds that RGVRRM can hit $5,000 in three days? Any chance you could get a small loan or bank note for the balance, interest rates are sooooo lowwwww...

I know people will see that car and worry that it can not be restored. Having personally done several restorations and all at the R&GVRRM, I can tell you we can restore it. It is actually in very good shape.

Just as proof, click here for an album of images of the work we did to restore Penn Central transfer caboose #18526 on the R&GVRRM Flickr site. I led both the interior and exterior restoration, but it was truly a team effort to restore a caboose that was given to us after a rollover!
Image

Additionally, here is what we are currently completing in the shop where this caboose will come to be restored. ex-Rochester Gas & Electric GE 45-tonner #1941 with all of its major paint work complete.

We should have it out of the shop under its own power in a matter of weeks.

So, please consider a donation to allow us the chance to do the above with this car and do it soon. You can donate directly via PayPal by clicking here.

Thanks!

What Chris said. Don't let exterior appearances fool you, this car is sound inside and out. We wouldn't consider it for acquisition otherwise.

We hope you'll consider donating! We had great fortune raising the first half, we're confident we can raise the second half.

We break it down this way...

We need 50 people each donating $100, or...

We need 20 people each donating $250, or...

We need 10 people each donating $500.

This is how we save stuff, folks. This is how preservation happens. It all comes down to cash. We appreciate every penny and we will recognize all donors in some manner (if so desired, we can also keep your donation "private").

Please do not wait for "someone else" to do something. If you have any feelings towards this car, if you have any interest at all in saving it from the scrapper's torch, then please consider donating. You don't have to be a "big ticket" donor to make a difference! We mean it when we say "every bit counts!"

If we sound a bit anxious, forgive us. We're very excited about the project and we working every avenue to bring this car "home."

Thank you for your consideration. Please donate!

I have no money to donate now, but when (Not if anymore :D) makes it home, I'll definitely help in bringing this one back to her glory. This caboose has a very special connection to me and it means a lot to get it back. :)

95100 in 1961:

95100 wearing her final LV scheme, on the final day of the LV.

According to:
http://www.anthraciterailroads.org/lvrr ... ooses.html
95100 is confirmed as having been in the green scheme..but as a restoration scheme choice? please no! ;)

Personally I would go with an earlier LV scheme..
(and if so, lose the window screens! those are ugly..)
IMO, the best scheme is the "as built" scheme..it is believed that all LV cabooses wore this scheme when new:
http://www.hebners.net/cr/crN5/lv95003.jpg

although..if the caboose is essentially still in its "1976 configuration" today, little modified by Conrail,
it might make sense to restore it to its 1976 appearence..including window screens, paintscheme,
and the "Apollo" "A" designation! thats all quite historically significant..hmmm..

All wonderful stuff, but we still need to raise funds before any of that discussion can take place! :-)

If we don't have the cash, then we don't have the caboose, and yet another historic car goes to razor blades.

Scot,

Thanks for the research. As the museum's painter, it is a real help, and we will hopefully get to start thinking about colors and lettering pretty soon.

As an FYI to everyone, it looks from the image above that all we are able to get is the caboose body. It should be noted that we will also be getting its proper trucks, steps, and etc. They are all there. There are some smaller pieces missing from the outside (some certainly cutoff by Conrail as they did to most of their cabooses having personally worked on three other former Conrail cars), and some fixtures inside we will need to replicate, however, the major parts, body, trucks, steps, and brake rigging are all part of the deal and the money we are trying to raise. We will be getting a whole caboose and not just the body.

-Chris

We are now 3/4's of the way to our goal for acquisition and movement!

I took the liberty of tweaking John Dziobko's photo, because it's a bit hazy and cyan (a common result of scanning slides)..
I tried to contact John to ask if he minded if I posted the new version here, but the "contact" form on his site doesnt work (it times out)
and google couldnt find an actual email address for him..so im just going to post it. (John, if you see this, I tried to contact you! ;)

This should be a slightly more accurate look at the same scene:

and while we are on the topic..wow..check out more of John's webpage! its a stunner! :)

it's one of my favorite paint schemes for this style caboose! It inspired me to act, I hope others follow as well...

Otto, I disagree - we DON'T have to wait until the funds are raised to have that discussion. In fact, some back and forth on what to do with it paint-wise might stimulate more interest and donations!

I really don't care which scheme it gets as long as it's preserved. I will point out however that the "A" letter for pool caboose assignment was relatively short lived and was not an actual part of the number - the ends for example did not get an "A". (PRR did something similar with yellow cupolas I believe.) But maybe the honor of picking the color scheme should go to the "mystery donor" who is generously opening their wallet to match funds.

Get off your keisters, guys and DONATE!!! Don't yak about it, DO IT!!! Send them 20 bucks. You really won't miss that... the cable bill is more than that each month. Give up a few beers for the month (probably not a bad idea anyway) and you won't miss the twenty. Or, forgo that latest model train and send 'em fifty or a c-note.

These guys have a great record for DOING, not BS-ing. SUPPORT them, fer cryin' out loud! Ah, that's better.

Yes, I sent a contribution. And I'm not even in the area.

Okay, I'm game, I like talking about the fun stuff like paint. Whatcha wanna talk about? :-) I'm already imagining this car in fresh paint, scrubbed interior, markers glowing, stove keeping the car warm as we roll down the line behind LV 211 on a cool fall evening... We have the opportunity to recreate a bygone scene that was once so common to the Rochester Branch and locals all over the LV system. We have a couple of freight cars... Wonder if we could clean up our PRR hopper car, and recreate a delivery of coal to the U of R power plant? So much potential!

We are all VERY excited about this project and we are GRATEFUL to everyone who has lent us their support... And not all of it has been cash, some of it has been offers of materials, labor... Everything helps!

ALSO... The Caboose-O-Meter has been updated... we're at $8750 in donations! Thanks again for everyone's support...
