Diesel Days Celebrates 75 Years of Diesel Locomotive Technology September 16-17

Powerful diesel locomotives are the backbone of the modern railroad industry. From humble yard switchers to high-horsepower road engines these locomotives have ruled the rails since their widespread introduction in the 1940s. Don’t miss your opportunity to climb aboard these kings of the rails during Diesel Days at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum, September 16-17.

Diesel locomotives are a common sight today, but railroads were initially skeptical of the new technology when it was introduced in the 1920s. While railroads were comfortable with the proven success of steam locomotion, diesels became more popular in the years following World War II. Improved designs saved money and cut down on expenses, becoming the logical choice for any railroad looking to expand and stay competitive. By the end of the 1950s, steam was vanquished and diesel was here to stay. Today these high-tech engines pull massive amounts of freight from coast to coast as an important part of growing our nation’s economy.

Our museum is home to several examples of restored vintage diesel locomotives that you can see, hear, and ride. Your mile-and-a-half round trip train ride disembarks at the museum’s restoration shop. Enjoy a self-guided tour of our unique exhibits as you visit New York State’s largest collection of historic trains. Take a tour of the engineer’s cab and discover what it takes to make these massive machines move. Upgrade your ticket to a cab pass and ride up front with the engineer!

Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for youth/seniors, and children under four ride for free! Refreshments are available for purchase. Trains depart every half hour from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. from our train station on Route 251 in the town of Rush. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a series of special events this year. Seats are limited so purchase your advance tickets today at http://www.RochesterTrainRides.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and check out our full schedule of events. All aboard!

For the first time since the 1950s, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 18-19 and 25-26. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke, Virginia.

Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds.

Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains. Refreshments will be available for purchase, including a full grill menu. Our museum gift shop is stocked with many railroad souvenirs for train buffs of all ages. ALL ABOARD!

I thought this loco was here last year, too. Or didn't they blow the whistle that time? :wink:

Yes, same locomotive as last year.

Everything prior to this page is a year old. I wanted an update. The time it took for you to write your responce you could have just said yes or no. I'm not driving all the way out there for a little more than a mile run for 20 bucks.

SST, there's no secret, the details of the event are spelled out on our web site:

http://rochestertrainrides.com/event/au ... ain-rides/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Special Event tickets are $20 to cover the cost of the extended 2-mile round-trip ride over a portion of the adjoining trolley trackage, the cost of leasing, trucking, fueling, and operating the steam locomotive, plus the live music and other entertainment we are offering as part of the event. We hope you'll consider supporting the museum and the operation of steam locomotives like the Viscose 6.
