>>>>(b)A stone bridge abutment next to a road crossed by the Thruway
via overpass, near MP301. Would this have been the old West Shore,
or an interurban?

That would be the West Shore Railroad that crosses Bonta Bridge Road. When traveling west, you'll see that ROW curl to the south a bit and cross the current CSX line.

If you were to travel east, you'll see the ROW on the south edge of I90 ... starting at MP 301 to MP 315 or so.

The West Shore was on the North Side of Port Byron and cossed over RT90 near Centerport Road and crossed over 31 on the west side of Weedsport over them abutments and came into Weedsport where the West Shore train station was on Weedsport-Sennett Road the Westshore crossed over RT31 then over Bonta Bridge Road. The sideing that is used by that Grain elavator in Jordon, NY is a section of the West Shore Main Line or was at leased part of the intechange track that connected to he NYC Yard that was there. The last Station Agent and Fraght Agent last name was Welch They were the last to work out of the NYC Yard Offfice in Jordon, NY there grand daughter was my 5th grade teacher.

Thanks for the information! And the Route 31 crossing were actually over the Erie Canal.

About when was the last station and freight agent position held? Would this be in the mid 1950's?

about one hour south of Albany passing under the NYST is a LONG covered structure.....
What is this covering?? pipes or quarry conveyer system??

Down near (just north of) where the CSX/West Shore crosses under the Thruway south of Albany, there are two stone abutments parrelling the thruway as it crosses over the cement plant conveyor. If indeed this was some kind of track at one time, the trestl would have been huge, but I honestly can't think of any inetrurban building a bridge that big.

These things are on the west side of the road, on each side of the massive cut in the land for the conveyor. Easier to see in the winter, but still visible in the "green" season if you look carefully.

Any ideas?

Found another Interurban crossing, west of Oriskany Rd in Whiteboro. I have seen it labelled as "New York State Railways". Not *exactly* sure of the crossing point, but from staring at the topo, it seems to be right here:
http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=43.12958,-75.30218&z=15&t=H
If you switch to the topo view, you can see some sort of ROW heading north from there.

If anybody has any route information about that interurban line, I'd appreciate it. It's not on any map I've found. (update) It's on this map, however the map lacks the detail I want: http://hometown.aol.com/metrafan/maptijny.html

Gents,

There is and old right of way the parallels the New York State Thruway on the west side from MM 55 for a few miles south.

It appears to cross from the west side to the east just south of the "Star Mountainville" plant, and appears to have been a spur to this property.

Once south of this "crossing" it's a graded embankment with cast concrete bridges over culverts and streams. You can see real well heading south.. It varies between road level to about 20 feet higher than the Thruway.

I once learned what railroad this was, but long since forgot. I wouldn't mind a refresher!

One of these RS&E overpasses crossed the NYC and West Shore and the center pier and south/rr west abutments are visible, but it was gone pre-Thruway and I think the grade and abutment north of the tracks were obliterated for the Thruway construction. But the parallell Route 31 to the north bows out to go around the end of the grade.

Unless this was filled in very recently, it was still there - but this one was a strange construction. It seems to have been a concrete culvert, or tunnel, underneath. Riding in a car if you look the south side (RR east) can be seen particularly when there's little or no snow and the grass is down. The ROW underneath is used as a snowmobile trail, although I think it's a power line access ROW from here going west and a public trail going east.

Part of the problem is that it's RIGHT at Interchange 34, so there's been much reshaping of the land right there. But, if you have a GPS receiver, and a copy of gpsbabel (or other software which can handle a GPX file), then you can download this URL into your GPS receiver:
http://rutlandtrail.org/gpx.cgi?lv-cana ... n.ny.track

In Canastota, it's just to the east of the High School where the road bends to the northeast. It goes about two blocks to the south, crosses the highway and Old Erie Canal State Park and crosses the West Shore (I think) on a high fill.

Going north on 13 from Exit 34, the road curves to the right and then the left. Where the curve to the left starts is the railbed. It then crosses a bunch of back roads and heads up to the east shore of Lake Oneida and Sylvan Beach.

Here's the current list. All corrections gladly appreciated! The first few up to the blank line is the Berkshire Spur. I've added the Walden & Newburgh Trolley and a bunch of mile marker listings for the north-south section. I'm still missing a few, so if you're planning to drive the thruway, please print this out and get corrections.

About when was the last station and freight agent position held? Would this be in the mid 1950's?

The sideing that is used by that Grain elavator in Jordon, NY is a section of the West Shore Main Line or was at leased part of the intechange track that connected to he NYC Yard that was there. correct the last agent that held the NYC Yard in Jordon, NY was in the 50's shortley after the building sat unused for a while. It became a bar during the PC Years. It then closed down again in the 90's where it then became a VFW for a bit before changeing hands again a year or 2 ago.
