Hello All!

Our 26th Annual Winter Train & Toy Show is being held at the Hamburg Fairgrounds Event Center & Expo Hall this weekend, February 18th & 19th. The show opens at 10am on Saturday and runs until 5pm, and Sunday, 10am till 4pm. This is our first large event of the year and I hope that you can attend to support the Society. The weekend weather report for both days looks great! Admission is $8 for adults and kids 12 & under are free. Free parking as well at the Fairgrounds.

There will be nearly 400 tables of model trains, model kits, collectible toys, dolls and much more at the show. In addition, four large model railroad layouts will be set up and running for your enjoyment. Our Society table will feature all of our progress and goals for 2017. The Williamsville Depot Committee will be sponsoring a Basket Raffle with a large selection of great prizes to be awarded on Sunday. You do not need to be present to win and the proceeds support the restoration projects at the depot.

On Sunday we will be holding our third Scavenger Hunt at the show. This has been a big hit with the kids and this year we have 4 round-trip tickets to any destination in New York State on Amtrak for the winner, plus tickets to ride on the Arcade & Attica Railroad as well.

97 Rock Radio will be doing a remote broadcast on Sunday from the show as they are promoting "97 Rock Family Day" at the Train Show. As a special event on Sunday, a local Cub Scout pack will be setting up a regulation Pinewood Derby Race Track with a $100 - 1st Prize generously donated by Niagara Hobby. If you have kids who have raced these Pinewood Derby Cars in the past, dust off your fastest car and race for great prizes on Sunday Afternoon from 1-3pm.

Our March Public Meeting will be held on Thursday March 16, 2017 at the Don Owens Center on the Heritage Discovery Campus located at 100 Lee Street in the City of Buffalo. The building is located between Elk Street and South Park Avenue. Should be a good show with highlights from member Geno Dailey's East Coast Amtrak trip. Admission is Free and the Public is Welcome.

But the big news from Monday, August 21st 2017 is below:

The Society has reached an agreement with the Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Steam Locomotive Trust to sell our long-haul tender in support of their project to build a brand new PRR T1 4-4-4-4 steam locomotive. The long haul tender was originally acquired by the Society to replace the gutted-out short tender for our PRR 2-10-0 I-1sa locomotive #4483. As part of the purchase agreement, the T1 Trust has agreed to fully restore our I-1’s short tender to its original specifications as part of our planned cosmetic restoration of the locomotive. The cost of the tender restoration is estimated to be approximately $75,000.

We’re very happy to partner with the T1 Trust to make PRR #5550 a reality. They bring a great deal of expertise to the table and we look forward to working with them in the restoration of our I-1 tender and seeing the long haul tender return to its intended use.

Our September Public Meeting will be held on Thursday September 21st, 2017 at the Don Owens Center at the Heritage Discovery Center. 100 Lee Street, Buffalo NY. 14210.

The theme of our September meeting will be about the New York Central and their passenger trains. As part of the program, we are happy to be joined by Joan Scalfani. For a 15-month span from 1960 to 1961, Joan worked a job she described as “walking from New York to Chicago.” Of course, she was not hitting the pavement herself for those 960 miles. She was riding on the 20th Century Limited passenger train as one of their famous hostesses. She will speak to us about her experiences on board the 20th Century Limited and the interesting people she met along the way. It is sure to be a fascinating talk.

The meeting is open to everyone and there is ample Free Parking. Many exciting developments for the Society will also be presented including the sale of our Long Haul Tender, the Orchard Park Depot Grant, our November Train Show and improvements at the HDC. Please come and join us.

Hello All,

Although there was a lot of coverage in July 2016 when the movie "Marshall" was being shot at Central Terminal and the old State Office Building in Buffalo, little notice was taken when the production company came to our Orchard Park BR&P Depot. We were thrilled to see several of the depot scenes featured in the movie trailer and TV ads which appeared this past weekend. Here is a screen grab of the depot. The movie opens at theaters this Friday, October 13th, 2017.

The show is a vendor sell out so there will be over 400 tables of model trains, railroadiana, collectible toys, dolls and much more at the show. In addition, there will be at least four large model railroad layouts set up and running for your enjoyment. Our Society table will feature all of our progress for 2017. Next week Tuesday the 14th, we will hold our November Public Meeting featuring a great presentation by noted railroad historian, Devan Lawton. Devans presentation will be "ALCO's I have Known" highlighting some of the 100's of locomotives he has throttled over his 45 year career as an engineer.

Just a quick reminder that the November 2017 Greater Buffalo Train Show is this weekend, Nov 18th & 19th in the Events Center at the Hamburg Fairgrounds.

On October 21st, 2017, the Buffalo Creek #43 crew and I started #43 for the last time this year before we had to dump the water and cover the radiators. The four minute YouTube video below shows how we did. Unfortunately we only have two traction motors fully wired at this time and we need all four to make our first move. Over the winter we will get the other two ready for next spring.

When #43 rolled out of the ALCO Schenectady shops in 1940, it was wired for Series/Parallel operation which would have allowed it to move with one pair of motors. But, sometime in the last 40 years, it was rewired for Series operation only necessitating all four motors be connected.

After it reluctantly started the engine ran good for over 2 hours and 13 gallons of diesel fuel. However, it gave us a chance to check out the systems we reconditioned over the summer and to charge the 11 on board loaner batteries. A huge shout out to Pat Connors and the BSOR for all their help moving this restoration along.
