Nice photos, Don. In a couple of years, the current two operable standard gauge steam locos in NJ goes to three! Could make for some interesting steam days at a central location if the logistics could be worked out!

Very recently the FRA inspected and approved 60 to return to service. Essentially now logistics and cosmetics.

Last week was a real good kick off to the project. Transportation Innovation's CMO was on site with a small part of the steam team last week (More flying in this week ). Lots got done once the lifting equipment arrived. One can see the Air pump, smoke box door, headlight, sand domes, bell, throttle, air tanks, main rods, power reverse, smoke stack, exhaust nozzle, some of the side rods, sand pipes , air pipes, oil tank and so on were removed, placed on pallets and shipped around the country to places were they will receive rebuilds. Again the Musuem is looking for some new good men, there will be a ton of projects to complete on the steamer. YOU DON'T NEED experence, you just need to be able to be safe around tools and people. There is lots of simple work to be done. The frame and tender will be in need of months of work at the Musuem site. If your interested in getting involved with this project or others on th esite, contact me or the Musuem. It you just don't have the time at this point, but really want to help out a tax deductable donation would truly be appreciated !!! Below one can see the Musuems 2-8-0, 385 is looking like she just rolled out of an overhaul on the Southern, last weekend she was standing gaurd over her long time friend at Whippany. Think of the thousands of people these 2 engines hauled around Morris County during the 60's, 70's and 1980. Step up to the plate if you can and give the Musuem some help in the form of some labor or a donation. THANK YOU FOR READING !!

As I advised there is so much to see here, this is another example of what you can see and the work they do at the WRM. After a beautiful restoration the " Jersey Coast " entered service on the M&E during August 2010. Work on the steam engine has been on going weekly. Still looking for some more volunteers to help with the project.

why the 4039 n not the 385? asking because no pilot truck,and restoring a steamer CANT be done in your back yard
where is this(engine)going to? who is doing the work,just curious and hope we can see or get updates as they go.

I am not at all involved with the project but the grant funding application occured way before the 385 came to Whippany.

So the 4039 is the old US Army steam engine?

Yes 4039 is ex-US Army.

The engine was disassembled on site, as noted earlier the contractor is Transportation Innovation. The Boiler will be going to CO. The appliances and running gear will be going to MN, some to the 261 shop and other's to the contractor's shop in that area. Again there's many parts of this project being done on site and help is needed. Remember the Musuem stepped up at took a very large loan to see this engine steam again, step up if you can and help them with the project. Also I have been noting there is some much equipment to see here, here's another example.

The Military Transport Association Of North Jersey group gave to the Whippany Musuem a $500.00 donation because the
engine is ex-army, these are the same people who are putting together the "Toys For Tots" train on Dec. 11th and 12th. so if there is anything you can donation to the project,please do.
It will be great to see her under steam again.
