Loaded coal train 502 made a rare morning daylight appearance in South Jersey today. This has been the 5th 502 to be delivered to the B.L. England generating station in Beesley's Point this year. Here they are, led by NS 2519, NS 8819, and NS 2564 (ex-Conrail) pulling 90 loads of coal up the Albion Grade through Penbryn, NJ-

NS 507 (empty coal train from Deepwater) made a rare daylight move back to Pavonia Yard with the WPCA51 crew having the honors. Even rarer, they ran their power long hood forward-

The sixth 502 coal train of 2013 made it's way down the Beesleys Point Secondary late Monday afternoon with-

NS 9288 (C40-9W)
NS 9220 (C40-9W)
NS 8781 (C40-9- recent repaint)

Any recent activity? Well under two years for potential coal firing as of the conversion schedule:

The current dates for the B. L. England coal units are (1) deactivate the 129 megawatt Unit 1 on 5/1/2014 and remove from current service the 155 megawatt Unit 2 for conversion to natural gas on 5/1/15.

The plant was online when I passed by last evening. Guess they're trying to burn off the rest of that coal.

likely due to Oyster Creek status plus the colder weather. While PJM is a summer peaking region, there is also a substantial peak on cold days. Most generation in PJM is selected through a day ahead auction, subject to reliability constraints. Nukes always run when able as the owners' bid into the market at a price of zero every day. Too off topic to explain here.

Hopefully B L England will be selected a lot in the auctions the next couple of years so there is a need for the trains. I'm sure the owner will try to burn up the coal inventory to near zero as the unit shutdown dates approach.

And the current 506 rolled in yesterday morning with SD60E 6957 leading on its first revenue run. The train has been emptied as of this afternoon and will probably run out as 507 either tonight or more likely tomorrow night and will have 8372 leading with a dash 9 wide in between.

Wow, John, you DO get around.. appreciate your photos of the whole scene! Quite the crossing light rig at Cross Keys Rd, huh? Is the little custard stand (the cat and the fiddle) still there? Winslow looks less haunted now since its all grown in..(except for the corpses of the abandoned locos)... here it is with my brand new shiny Instamatic-eye-view in March 1970.. quite a difference!
