LINCOLN – It hasn't been easy finding a successor to fill the well-worn, if not a little smelly, shoes that Bill Farrand has filled for the past 15 years, but the folks at Clark's Trading Post are trying.

Haha...for years people have said I should be the Wolfman! Especially when riding the train. What a cool job.

The wolfman and his car was really fun when I was a child. That and the Climax are what I remember the most. Bill did a great job.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill one railfan's day. Just a real nice guy (unlike his alter-ego). One of my favorite memories was when the engineer would blow down and Wolfman would dissapear in an envelope of Climax steam (Bill was far enough away that the vapor just drenched him and wasn't hot enough to do any harm). That was a crowd pleaser. :-D

Clark's Wolfman looks for successor

The Wolfman heard the train's whistle from his home, a half mile from Clark's Trading Post, during warm afternoons last summer. He sat alone, the pleasant sound moving him into an emotional mixed bag, of children and small-town fun, of what he once had but no longer does. "I'm taking it kind of badly," Bill Farrand, 51, said yesterday by phone. "I really strongly miss it. I hear the whistle all the time in the summer."

During one railfan weekend Bill was doing his Wolfman thing. Yelling and carrying on as the train was going by. During this, we were on a dirt mound taking our pictures like any good railfan. As soon as the train disappeared, Bill "Wolfman" turned to us and in a very civilized tone and said "Boy, the stocks on Wall Street took a beating this week. Didn't they?" I don't think that I had laughed as hard as I did that day. I super nice guy. He was very kind to my then 4 year old son, who was scared, but fascinated by him. Bill even let him sit in his Wolfman car. Bill will be missed as the Wolfman.
