As a New Englander who doesn't get out to the Midwest very often, but an admirer of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend, I was wondering how much freight if any still moves over the South Shore.
Also since a public agency (NICTD) now runs the passenger service, is there still an existing South Shore freight-only company, or is this contracted out to some short line?

From another New Englander who will be visiting northern Indiana next month:

Would love to catch South Shore freight trains, especially in the streets of Michigan City.
Is there daytime weekday freight service in that area? Any idea of approximate times?
We will have several hours for trainspotting.

\Thanks,
Lee
