In the present CSX world. Coal trains for the Morgantown Power Plant originate in the mines of Western Maryland, West Virginia and SW Pennsylvania. The trains get recrewed at Brunswick, MD for the trip from Brunswick to Benning, using the Metropolitan Sub and parts of the Capital Sub to reach Benning Yard with the power on the geographical South end of the train. To depart Benning to go on to Morgantown they move on the Landover Sub and Amtrak to Bowie with the power on the geographical North end of the train. At Bowie they leave Amtrak trackage on proceed South on the Popes Creek Sub to the Morgantown Power Plant. Empties are handled in reverse.

There is some merchandise business at Benning, Joe Smith scrap yard loads out cars that mostly head South to Richmond and beyond.
