I think that CN doesn't care and they just want to get as much money as possible; but as infrastructure provider they should have responsibility to keep the tracks in a state of good repair (the AMT is paying plenty of rent). It would be best if CN just sold the whole line to the AMT (or MTQ), then the AMT can pay for the track upgrades and we'd be done with this mess.

I thought the bilevels already went through the tunnel, so that shouldn't be a problem, no?

ant6n wrote:Maybe its cuz the only thing that's been running on those tracks in twenty years is the mr-90, which is much lighter. And those tracks just can't take the weight.

What I don't get is why they don't just buy/lease three or four surplus/used electric only engines that were used in the NEC, which should be lighter and ready to go, at least in terms of track and weight concerns (plus, much cheaper).
I doubt it is the reason.

The Central Station train tracks are class 1 track (speed is up to 15 mph) while the tracks on the Deux-Montagnes subdivision are class 4 or 5 track since the trains can run up to 65 mph. Class 4 or 5 tracks require more maintenance and are in a much better shape than class 1 train tracks, so the ALP-45DP can run on the Deux-Montagnes subdivsion without any problems. The only modification that they have mad on the locomotives is the wheel profile in order to reduce the lateral forces exerted on the rail.

I think that the main reason for not deploying immediately the ALP-45DP's on the Deux-Montagnes subdivision is because there's still a series of testing that has to be done in electric mode and in the Mount-Royal tunnel since those engines have only been used in diesel mode until now.

I live near a Deux-Montagnes station and have never seen any ALP-45DP's being tested on the Deux-Montagnes line...
What about the renovations needed on the tracks for which CN wanted the AMT to pay for?

A year ago, just before CN banning, I had filmed the ALP-45DP's being tested on the Deux-Montagnes subdivision:

I was referring to the tracks near Gare Centrale not taking the weight, and needing upgrades. Are there any other trains on the tracks used by the Deux Montages trains?

Sometimes, there are some CN freight trains, which are heavier than the MR-90, using the Deux-Montagnes subdivision in order to join the Doney spur. Sometimes, some of those freight trains are also going until the St-Eustaches yard located in north of the Deux-Montagnes train station, here's a video:

I understand what you mean. But the ALP-45DP can run on the tracks between Jonction de l'Est and the south entrance of the Mount-Royal tunnel since they are class 4 train tracks, which can support the forces produced by a heavy train running at 65 mph. Also, the train tracks of the Deux-Montagnes subdivision were entirely rebuilt when the train line was being restored from 1993 to 1995. Unfortunately, the train tracks in Montreal Central Station haven't been replaced since the construction of the station in 1943 and due to the maintenance standards for class 1 tracks which are less strict than the standards required for upper class tracks, they need to be replaced before the locomotives can run again in the station.

The AMT said they were talking about it with the CN two months ago... AMT is going to have to pay for these repairs

It is now confirmed:

the AMT ALP-45DPs will be reintroduced on the CN's rail network starting this summer.

Mont-St-Hilaire line: summer 2013
Deux-Montagnes line: fall 2013, they are waiting that the construction work is completed on the Jonction de l'Est

Since three years have passed since the last post I'm hoping to get an update on which locos types are used on each of AMT's lines.

If anyone can help answer this, and if there is more detail as to the individual train numbers that a certain type of loco works then even better. Also, information on any trains that are booked for multiple locomotives would also be appreciated.

I'm planning a visit in November and am trying to put together as much info as possible beforehand.

The ALP-45DP are currently used on the following AMT train lines:
  • - Mascouche line
    - Saint-Jérôme line
    - Vaudreuil-Hudson line
    - Mont-Saint-Hilaire line
Only on the Mascouche line the locomotives are used in both diesel and electricity. On the other lines, they are used 100% time on diesel. They were supposed to be used on the Deux-Montagnes line which is an electric line, but the AMT has now come short-handed in rolling stock in order to increase service on this line.
