Knoxville Locomotive Works KLW20B

There's another new entrant to the medium horsepower roadswitcher market: the KLW20B from Knoxville Locomotive Works.

The first prototype is rebuilt from an EMD GP and features an MTU 12V4000 rated at 2000 HP.

Its interesting that to reuse the EMD AR 10 alternator that they have to use a 2 to 1 speed reducer and what it doesn't say is that it requires a pedestal bearing to support the front end of the single bearing AR 10. It must be interesting getting all that aligned.

Looks fairly average. It seems a bit.. angular? Not a bad thing, just a curious point.

Yeah, the edges on the nose are extremely sharp looking. (By sharp I don't mean attractive, I mean literally sharp!)

The AR-10 is freestanding and has bearings on both ends. The CA frame is bolted to the AR10 frame, wih the CA armature bolted to the AR10 armature on one end-and a coupling disk on the other end which bolts to the engine flywheel.

BrightStar; you better check your information. The armature is supported at the back end by a roller bearing and the front end is bolted to a torque tube that in turn that is bolted to the flex plate that is bolted at the rim to the engine coupling disc. All this weight is supported by the rear crankshaft bearing that is elongated for the purpose of supporting about 1500 lbs. external weight I have been told. Its been that way since the first 567 engine in 1938. When a alternator is removed from the engine wedges have to be placed between the armature and the pole pieces to support the weight.

So how many of these wonders have been build or sold ??
If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???

We have our demonstrator the KLWX 2250 and we also have a couple other models in production right now (sorry, not allowed to get into specifics about this).
