Perhaps, for the NYA's former customers east of Babylon on the Montauk Branch, as well as potential off-line customers who can be served by the team tracks along the line, an improving economy, and, perhaps some entreaties from NYA itself and local government, will bring freight trains out that way again....

If its all LCL then that sort of freight really isn't well suited to rail. Freight used to travel by rail because both roads and road vehicles were hopeless until the 1950's.

How many team yards/unused sidings are east of babylon?

Perhaps they're looking to BRT to be the future hub for rail to truck transfers out east? Concentrating the traffic at one terminal that NY&A doesn't even have to worry about switching.

Considering all sidings are unused, here's a list of all of them:

Hendrickson
Bay Shore Team
84 Lumber
Sayville Double End Freight
Patchogue Team
PT Siding (?)(not sure if used for freight)
Speonk Freight Track
Southampton Lumber
Bridgehampton North Freight Track
East Switch Freight Track

I thought the MTA gave the NY&A a subsidy to run freight traffic on LI because it was a money losing proposition. Was that a true fact? If so then why let them abandon a customer?

Didn't 84 Lumber close in Islip a few years back?
Actually, is there a list of which former customers of NY&A east of Babylon have closed?

Just because there is a freight siding doesn't mean there is business anymore for it. Some of the sidings listed below are not part of the transfer agreement and LIRR will not provide NYA access to them anyway.

Hendrickson - Never was any business here for NYA
Bay Shore Team - Never any business here for NYA
84 Lumber - Property sold. 84 Lumber does take cars now at BRT.
Sayville Double End Freight - Had a lumber customer at one time, not sure if they still receive cars
Patchogue Team - I believe LIRR uses this for MOW
PT Siding (?)(not sure if used for freight) - It's a passing siding, not a freight track.
Speonk Freight Track - NYA had a customer here which subsequently went out of business. LIRR also kicked them out of the yard, so no future business here.
Southampton Lumber - That siding is I believe to Riverhead Building Supply. They take an occasional car in Riverhead.
Bridgehampton North Freight Track - Pulver Gas is there.
East Switch Freight Track - Don't know where this siding is referring to.

Southampton Lumber switch is gone as of last summer. And I'm assuming East Switch Freight Track means East Switch to Bridgehampton double ended freight track since the west switch is blocked and spiked. Any cars spotted at Pulver would be shoved in through the east switch of the DEF.

Jay or Freightguy, when you guys used to run out there, would they give you a run (and return) order for one train length east of the second side track switch east of BH or would they run you to BH only and get an A card for station work under yard limits?

It would depend on what you requested depending upon the work that needed to be performed. When R. Cody was the rules examiner, Bridgehampton and Southold was cleaned up a bit on the order and it would read "one train length east of east switch north track Bridgehampton" (or Southold). The return order could be issued, depending upon what other trains may have been out there.
