The horns may have had to be moved for the movement over NEC. I think Amtrak barred LIRR GP38's because of catenary issues in the past.

Here's an oddball question: anyone have any idea if P&W might have went down amtrak to harold, then some way to fresh pond last night? (tuesday-wednesday night). P&W came over hell gate today northbound, with a lot of empties, around 10am. LAst night though, around midnight, i heard something diesel going down the amtrak side of the bridge. It seemed like a short train and could have been light engines. (it was moving way too fast to be on the freight track). it could have just been an amtrak work train, and P&W came in later... who knows.

All of that said, anyone have any idea if there'll be another P&W run this week?

Can anyone recommend a good place to view the stone train in Queens or Nassau county ???

Thanks in advance

Try Queens Village LIRR station, located at Springfield Blvd. and Jamaica Ave. Good sight lines, Q.V. team yard is next to it, and it is five minutes west of the Cross Island Parkway.

The area just west of the New Hyde Park station is a good spot at the moment. The Village has cut all the brush and and is installing a new fence. Presently there is no fence in place and you have a clear view of the Main for pictures.

Mineola is another great place to see the train. Stand on the west side of the station and you can see the train comming over the hill.

At Queens Village the r.o.w. is wider, so you have better camera angles of E/B freight trains from the W/B platform. Also, there has been a cut of NS gondolas on the spur next to the E/B platform, and some flatcars in the team yard.

Why are these stone trains limited to 40 cars? Is that the maximum number of cars plus motive power that can be accomodated by LIRR sidings along the way from Fresh Pond to Holtsville?

Also, is it only at Holtsville that there is an NYA customer that receives stone, or are there other locations/customers?

The limit is 40 because that is all the siding at Prima can unload at a time, and they need every inch of it.

Arriva Concrete also takes cars of stone in Yaphank.

Was an unloading facility constructed in Yaphank? How many cars do they get, and how often?

I think those NS hoppers were brought down onto the secondary. I was down there 2 weeks ago and saw a whole string of NS and LIRR hoppers and flat cars.

The Arriva Concrete siding was a pre-existing siding, with an unloading pit. The current customer's name is actually Apple Concrete, and they took a shipment of cars about once a week last year.
