The city gov. claims it will spend 100M on freight improvements. Zero specifics are mentioned for rail. It sounds like they want to better utilize existing rail property for trans-load facilities and sidings.

7 years later and SBMT is still essentially vacant. 14 years to activate a new yard...the list goes on and on. And its not just Railroad projects.

I have little faith anything will come of this, other than 100M disappearing before our eyes and spent on consultants who then kick back some of it as campaign contributions. No specifics are mentioned, and there's not a whole lot of real estate they can reuse to create new transload facilities even if they can find customers to use them.

There is actually quite a bit of land if one looks hard enough and is willing to pay. Lots of private investment going on such as the new sand operation in Bergen Point, and there is something in the works for a marine transload terminal outside of Oak Point Yard. Working with NYCEDC and PANYNJ is like pissing in the wind. Been there, done that.

The new marine terminal at Oak Point is up and running. It's for importing cement by ship from a Canadian-government-backed cement plant up on the Gaspé Peninsula.
