Hi,

I'm having a Lionel S-4 custom painted as the M&E's #14 in the 1950's scheme (like the new Atlas model)...any idea model colors are a close match for the orange-y red and blue? Also, anyone know of good color photos of this scheme?

Thanks!

M&E 14 wore two slightly different red schemes before the current M&E Ry., Inc., overhauled her and returned her to service in their present day scheme. I have an original color slide of her taken in Essex Fells by M&E Director Gene Becker on the turntable onher second day of revenue service in 1952 and the red has a pronounced orange hue. In 1956 the M&E's wooden enginehouse burned to with 14 inside resulting in heavy damage including a badly crumpled cab from the roof collapsing on it. It was returned to Alco for rebuilding and came back with a slightly darker orange-red. It also received an all welded cab in place of the original riveted one. The striping and lettering were imitation gold leaf. The blue bands appears to have remained the same shade. Gene Becker designed the color scheme for 14 and applied it to his 2-inch scale Centerville & Southwestern RR 4-wheel diesel mechanical switcher which operated on the family farm in Roseland.

While RS1 No. 15 had the same paint design it used different paint applied by Master Mechanic Joe DeTorrezzo and M&E Treasurer John D. McEwan III. The paint came from Exxon Corp. which was redecorating all the former Esso Gasoline stations in the area. Most notable was the deeper red and creamy yellow striping and lettering.
