It didn't do either, but buried itseld in the mud. Maybe at low tide, you may be able to see it......
As for Casey Jones, he jumped at the last second aalong with his fireman Sim. If the Piranda have not gotten them, they may be back on duty by the time you read this......running an Alco C636.
Well since this topic never got locked and since it has nothing to do with the Morristown & Erie let me chime in.
It is said that one of M&E's original steamers built somewhere in the late 1800's sank into Bee Meadow Pond after a fairly large derailment on the 3 mile long Malapardis Branch. For those of you who don't know the history of the branch it was primarely built to serve the old Moore Brick Manufacturing company. The branch from Route 10 to Hanover Brick was abandonded around 1936 or so...
If anyone has gone swimming at the old Bee Beadow Pond, before the pool was built, then you may have heard the stories about the swimmers either getting electrocuted or sucked in by the ghostly figures from the famous wreck!! I believe the pool was built in the 1960's at the old facility!
Now, you might ask.....How does this tie in with the NYSW??? It doesn't and it SHOULDN'T!!!!!!!!!!!
UNDER WATER LOCO?
HANOVER TWP. BOUGHT THE PROPERTY AROUND THE MID 60's....
DURING RENOVATION TO THE PROPERTY IN AND AROUND THE PONDS, THE TOWN HIRED A LOCAL CONTRACTOR....THEY SET UP A LARGE PUMP AND LOWERED THE WATER LEVEL SO WORK COULD BE DONE AROUND THE BANKS OF THE PONDS.
THIS EXPOSED MOST OF THE POND BOTTOM AND THE OLD PUMP HOUSE AND OTHER DEBRIS LEFT FROM THE BRICK FACILITY.
THERE WAS NO SUBMERGED M&E LOCOMOTIVE....
**AND ON MOTHERS DAY IN 1970 A FATHER & SON WERE SAILING ON THE POND WHEN THEIR METAL MAST CAME CLOSE / CONTACTED THE OVERHEAD POWER LINES THAT CROSS ONE SIDE OF THE POND, CAUSING SEVERE BURNS TO THE FATHER AND KILLING HIS SON....
