Re: Major derailment @ Spuyten Duyvil

Aren't there overspeed devices on these trains that are activated if a train continues to run overspeed? I would think that when the train passed CP12 it would have been going too fast, and an emergency brake application (penalty brake application) should have been applied. That is, if the engineer...

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I greatly prefer my tax dollars to be routed towards repairing bridges that carry passenger trains instead of hikers.

Good topic, beanbag! My first choice : Phase III, all the way . Looked great on rolling stock as well as motive power. People sometimes underestimate how difficult it is to improve upon something so simple yet so pleasing. I'm not a foamy or rivet-counter type of person, so I don't get "worked ...

I'm not aware of any present text work-in-progress concerning the Reading's Newtown Branch. Indeed, the only book on this specific subject that I've ever remotely heard of was just a small booklet authored by Philly-area railfan Larry Eastwood. It's far from current, though; I believe the print date...

North Philadelphia

North Philadelphia, of course, is an NEC stop, and GAS still says that 5 trains a day stop there (I haven't checked the current timetables to confirm). It's in a rather challenging location, and has been in decline for years. So why still stop there? (Granted, we have gone from about one Amtrak rid...

All the dates you provided correlate to things going on elsewhere, after the war everything was in a nasty state due to the huge demand on physical plant and rolling stock, and the rest is of course as they say history. Thanks for that detailed explanation and connecting storyline to what we have t...

NHSL - other competition? Turn back the clock.

Another more geographical question - if the NHSL had a "competitor" in the system, would it be the Paoli-Thorndale line or the Norristown line? In other words, does NHSL serve the main line crowd or a crowd further north? If you roll the calendar back to a time before September 1949, the ...

http://www.septa.org/alert/man-nor-shuttle-details.html Very informative link; thanks. I couldn't help but notice this item near the bottom: The continuation of the replacement if the 80-plus year old overhead contact system. In the next year we will be replacing another 12 miles of overhead wire. ...

[-lots of good info-] Thanks for sharing that additional set of details! :-) There's likely some folks that haven't yet heard those aspects of the tale, though I'm au courant with it. Clearfield and RDGAndrew, I'm confused about the nature (rather than the content) of the points you're trying to ma...

I'm unaware of any ex-PRR position-light block signals on this emphatically ex-Reading branch. Perhaps you're thinking instead of the former PRR line to Manayunk via Cynwyd?

Hi all, Looking for information on the old RDG/SEPTA 'Push-Pull' train before it was retired. Hello Mike, Please note that SEPTA only owned the motive power and rolling stock; Conrail operated the trains under contract for SEPTA until the diesel services (except on the Newtown Branch) were disconti...

This is shocking news. :( My sympathies to his family and friends - he will be missed. I always enjoyed reading his insightful posts on this forum; especially those which described his many adventures with Amtrak's massive NECIP effort of the late 1970s.

I am experiencing the very same problems that lirr42 reported above, but even worse: I do not even have the "Report This Post" button! I am using the roughly two-week-old Firefox 21.0 for Mac when viewing this forum, and have already cleared my browser cache and stored cookies since readin...
