Actually 184 isn't too far off from the original P42 paint scheme, they didn't do black around the cab of that one. Here is a good shot of the front of it. 66 is trailing too. http://www.flickr.com/photos/akagoldfish/5618135024/in/contacts/ Those two went east on the Capital tonight. I don't want t...

Must meet or follow the following specs - local deviations are authorized (mentioned in the specs): AASHTO - High Speed Rail - Documents/Specifications http://www.highspeed-rail.org/Pages/DocsSpecs.aspx Some heavy reading in those specs. Gil, known as Bill somedays ... I think people might be missi...

Great to read the articles on the Washing and San Fransisco metro's new cars process. Am I being far too idiotic to think that at least two of those cities could work together and design an excellent subway car. I realize that the specifications might be different, but I do think that, for such com...

At Dover NH, the gates go down at Chestnut St. on the approach of an eastbound Downeaster. Depending which door the conductor is using. the locomotive can stop clear of the crossing and after a minute or so, the gates will go up. When the train gets ready to leave, it creeps forward until the cross...

IMO, right where Ikea is, somebody should be utilizing the great freight access that is there. Those two old stubs do nothing but hold work train cars, and with the Green Line extension, the work train staging area has got to move, so the tracks will be opened up. One could be turned into a path (a...

Hey, with the age of the T fleet, it was hard to tell it was a joke from the headline!

CSX: It's not an April fools joke  UrbEx: Close but no cigar! It's actually for the construction of the Assembly Square Station. Service will terminate at Sullivan Square. Whether this will be full time for the entire 38 months or if shuttling will be phased in during nights and weekends for ...

Can I see your documentation for this also, regarding the "dangerous" noise level test(s) please ? The documentation that I have found disputes your claim, indicating that the noise level at the center of the new Ashmont Loop after mitigation (noise dampening) was 75 dBA [/b], reduced by ...

Hmm. . . interesting. . . . "The entire weight of the motor is supported by two rigid axles, overcoming the necessary friction caused by the motor bearing upon a revolving axle." "The wheels, 26 inches in diameter, are loose upon the axle" So If I'm reading this right, then the a...

Jee-zus. This thing's used like, half a dozen times per year in near-record snowy winters. And only after very large accumulations like these blizzards we've been hit with. There are some winters where we barely get anything that size and they don't operate at all. You really think a hi-rail truck ...

With the added complication that not all F-type A-units were built with nose-m.u., and I think railroads adding m.u. to existing units didn't always use the same location. ... Notice how high the m.u. connection is. (Probably, if all locomotives were of F-type configuration, a high mounting would m...

I don't really see a benefit right now to larger hopper cars. -Mines/powerplants are designed around standard-size equipment - changing the dumping equipment would cost money (as mentioned.) -Will the swing and overhang of longer cars also be a problem in potentially cramped/close clearance ares wit...

AMTK 145 has been painted in a new, Phase III-inspired livery. Note this is a P42, not a P40. There is no specific car limit, a Genesis has a 800 Kw HEP unit which is good for aproximatly 20 to 26 superliners depending on what season it is. Summer and winter draw a heck of lot more than spring and fall ;-) That wouldn't leave a whole lot of horsepower free for getting the train moving, righ...

You also loose the braking capacity of 8 wheels as well . . .(16 for a 6-car train.) That can be compensated for with the addition of supplemental braking such as track brakes and dynamic braking. Mechanisms such as these apply friction for stopping only when you want it and not on a constant basis...
