Re: CSX to acquire Pan Am Railways

The sale/trade has already happened a year ago. 800 million in stocks and a pristine seat on the board is what Timmy demanded in exchange for Systems. He did it this way to avoid captial gains tax. All CSX needs is for the Feds to rubber stamp the trade. How can CSX already own the railroad without...

Something that works to Chessie's advantage is the fact that Maine has had p!ss-poor service by the current owner/operator for the past 40 years. This is essentially why there is so much widespread support from shippers for the Pan Am-CSX combination. Another investor would receive the same support.

Looking at the map, if Guilford were to effectively compete with a combined Norfolk Southern-Conrail system, one would think that they would have wanted the entire Nickel Plate and the Big Four line verses a group of owned and trackage rights lines. Dipping down south and west of Cleveland to Crestl...

CP's 261/262 train pair ran as far east as Ayer, Mass. in the 1993 timeframe. An intermodal yard was built in Ayer to also facilitate movements in an out of the Port of Boston that never really came into fruition. CP eventually ended all of the service a few years later.

Did Nine Dragons Paper consider utilizing the Port of Portland for their export service? Why use the Conley Terminal on the south side of Boston, which as the article stated, does not have direct rail service instead of the Moran Terminal on the north side and more convenient to Pan Am's network to ...

CP has filed comments re: its thoughts around the proposed CSX acquisition of Pan Am and downstream effects: The Transaction marks a fundamental restructuring of the competitive incentives relating to the entirety of the New England rail map. The Board should proceed with great caution here, and co...

This might have been treated as a minor transaction if Pan Am had considered selling the entire network to a short line. Pan Am is a terminal railroad that interchanges with the Class I railroads and the STB would probably prefer that to be maintained. It is ironic that those complaining about compe...

What track work is planned on the old CM&Q lines in Maine and Quebec this coming work season?

Is the line up to Keag in daily operation now? How much track work was put into the line over the last year?

Typically you don't see a series of big transactions strung together in a short amount of time (remember CP just bought the tunnel for a pretty penny), and it's yet to be determined how CP will cement it's future on the Windsor-Chicago portion of its network. Chicago to Detroit is the biggest gap i...

The MILW might have never anticipated that both NP and GN would fall under essentially the same ownership.

Hill and Morgan found interest in the NP so they did what was necessary to bring it out of bankruptcy and control it. Do not know if the MILW looked or made any offers to acquire it.

Re: speculation about South Pass and the Milwaukee Road: Not likely. The C&NW made it as far as Lander, WY (east base of South Pass) and didn't go any further, but further speculation was building to California or through Idaho to a port in Oregon. Didn't happen for them, so not likely for a Mi...

One has to ask the fundamental question, why was the PCE constructed in the first place? The answer: MILW was boxed in after roughly after 1900. The GN and NP did not need the MILW to forward their Chicago traffic, they had the CB&Q. MILW could have lived with their upper Midwestern network, but...

Is the Moosehead siding just east of Greenville? From Google Earth view, it looks like the siding is just over a mile long with the rails removed.
