At the end of the day, Jay and Rumford both still have uncertain futures; enough to make any potential PAR suitor more than a little gun-shy about them from a financial investment point of view.

The PRR also had the benefit of not commencing on their major electrification projects until after the NYNH&H had electrified from New York to Stamford in 1908; they could learn off of the NH's example and experience, instead of doing something for the first time without any idea of how it'd tur...

If we weren't talking about running a railroad, I'd say try and go renewable; but there's just no way you can supply what electric traction needs by just renewables, at least without investing hugely in energy storage schemes (be they batteries or pumping up a reservoir and draining it later, or som...

Since a friend recently moved into a house nearby Revere Beach, I've looked a number of times around at various points of where the RoW runs adjacent to the Boulevard; certainly would be interesting to see how they'd manage to achieve grade separation if the RoW ever gets re-built. It was grade sepa...

Suppose it's relevant to say that P&W originally owned New Haven through Providence to MA State Line due to breaking free of NH/PC; they sold it to Amtrak, and that's how they got the freight rights there.

How's traffic going now that summer is in full swing? (Besides from just being curious, I'm also going up on vacation to the Thomaston/Rockland area in a couple of weeks, so I'm interested in some info about train times to go catch some of them myself. )

Sounds like a perfect candidate for the South Boston Marine Industrial Park area with a new customer on the new Track 61 extension. Lots of empty space down there, real close to the Mass Pike and Ted Williams Tunnel and even closer to the airport which is one of their major customers. And so close,...

It's much better that it was finished before the demand picks up, especially considering all the teething issues with leaks/etc it's been having.

The B&M might have met its doom as an independent road much earlier then, though; neither Commodore Vanderbilt or his son would have taken kindly to such competition. The BHT&W was for a time to be part of the D&H system, to which Vanderbilt got control of the Troy and Boston running par...

Re: Delaware River Commuter Rail Tunnel PA-NJ

The slew of transportation agencies is symptomatic of the nature of the funding given for these options; tax money is going to be spent in the places where it's collected, and it takes a lot of coordination and cooperation for any interstate entity to form. PANYNJ is a good example of that going wro...

For the B&A Webster Branch, I have taken some photos of it when I rooted around for traces of it; the four for that bridge on Bridgehunter are what I'd end up linking, though, so I have no more photos to post. It is pretty easy to get access to that bridge on the west side of the river. Other si...

Interesting to see how it's particularly going to switch where non-time sensitive customers will receive their freight from; for the time-sensitive, the UP/BNSF still can get it by sending out hotshots in the area where the change is happening. I'm interested to see how much this'll affect intermoda...

While PCBs are all toxic, not all forms of them are equally toxic; ingestion is the main means of exposure, as well. But it's the same thing like with the toxicity of mercury, lead, chemical components of cigarettes, etc... it's a statistical risk, that is to say it's a probability. Doesn't happen t...

From the CNZR - Armory Branch thread: CNZR is installing Cement ties and new track North of cement plant this past week just past Melrose CT off RTE 191. Per CNZR, the long and forever taking crossing for cement factory to be installed this spring (2015) and therefore they are once again laying ties...

Which also hits upon the two reasons, one spoken and one less-spoken, of why SEPTA discontinued service west of Wawa in the first place. One, that description of the line (most likely) is an apt one for the line when they discontinued service. But two, we all know SEPTA doesn't want to maintain two ...
