STB released a decision today that sets up the (correct) order of proceedings for the remainder of the case. (It's actually a correction of a previous one filed a few days before on the 23rd that put the wrong dates. Oops.) ... On July 15, 2016, the parties filed a joint proposed schedule under whic...

Unclear what "alternative railroad management" is. My assumption was interpreting it as "alternatives to the current railroad management"; in other words privatizing the railroad, or at the very least changing the board of directors in some way (getting new non-town people on, e...

Have to say I was a little skeptical/pessimistic about such a private interest doing something like this at first - in no small part because the more public-private kind of deals have a tendency to reek of corruption, or otherwise involve the private entity trying to profit as much off of public $$$...

Does PAR still have any claim to the Barbers Yard property? The NECR Palmer interchange is quite likely going to move to Worcester out of convenience and cost-savings for both G&W and CSX (who can reduce presence @ Palmer by letting Framingham sort it instead). But that puts pressure on P&W...

Well, it depends what good things you want. Even if some of them have some questionable decision-making at times (*cough*CoE*cough*), they're all incorporated for good things on a much grander and more important scale. I can't fault the decision-making/risk management even if I wish it wasn't workin...

Wow, I miss checking up on here for a day and something this seismic shifts! Anyways, a couple idle thoughts: I'm curious how this'll affect traffic on the Gardiner Branch, now that the combined system is bumping elbows with PAR/PAS more. In theory you could roll freight through over the B&M to ...

Interesting that despite going to Narragansett Pier, it didn't actually go to the pier itself, and terminated in Wakefield instead.

And more recently, I think we all remember what happened when lightning struck a bungalow near Forest Hills and the kinds of chaos it caused in the interrim of its outage.

The old-quad-tracked station design was built during the brief era where the New Haven had a controlling interest in the B&M, and was planning a cross-harbor tunnel and complete quad-tracking of the Eastern Route out to the Beverly split. In practice, the outer tracks ends up being used mostly ...

Oh, definitely. You'd probably see non-stop Atlanta-Boston trains traversing a Southern-N&W-Reading-L&HR-NH route via. Maybrook. So basically a good chunk of the old Alphabet Route! (Though, there's still the issue of how'd you get the trains to Boston even when you got across the Po...

Switching MBTA Needham Line Commuter Rail off the NEC onto subway - Is there enough capacity in the Orange Line? Someone should have told them to keep the Washington St EL instead of stealing tracks from the NEC back in the mid 80s. We would have saved lots of $$$, had a 4-track NEC (or more) into ...

Alternative 2 shows a new "Segment" between Boston and Providence. What is that? I would have liked to see a new "Segment" through Providence under College Hill utilizing the abandoned tunnel and then straight up to Attleboro. That would be a faster trip than going through Pawtu...

July 1st is going to be ugly on the first train that goes belly up I looked up what my Zone 4 pass cost 10 years ago. In 2007 it was $186/month. Now in 2016 it's about to become $263/month. That's over a 35% increase in less than a decade. People are tired and frustrated of paying more and receivin...
