Interesting Development At Model Railroader

News has leaked out over the weekend that Model Railroader magazine's editor, Neil Besoughloff, has either suddenly retired, or been let go, depending on what version of the story one reads. He is the third editor to go at the magazine since around the year 2000, perhaps in response to the Kalmbach ...

Athearn was bought out by Horizon and then MDC went the same way to Horizon. That cut out a lot of Walthers sales. Then Atlas got into a problem with its supplier. There went another group of sales. All in all, Walthers has done a pretty good job even staying in business. :-) Indeed, the number of ...

Once upon a time Walthers could be counted on to provide hobbyists with virtually any and everything one saw in their catalog...and do so within a week. Today what stock they do maintain is certainly not in any depth and a very high percentage of items are listed on back-order with an arrival date ...

This rumor has circulated around the internet several times in recent years, but so far there has yet to be any real evidence presented to seriously support the idea. One thing it clear, however, and that is Walthers, nor its annual consumer catalog, are any longer the real go-to source when wishing...

Indeed, I must agree with the bulk of those responding that the 1000th issue of MR proved to be a considerable disappointment and very sub par relative to past anniversary issues. If one wants to see the sort of content one came to expect from Model Railroader in its hey day, when it truly was the h...

In addition to many moderate to large hobbyshops, large book/magazine stores like Barnes and Noble carry Model Railroader magazine. Incidentally, the latter source carries a number of monthly model railroading magazines.

The hobby is what it is today and honestly only a shadow of what it once was in general popularity. All the things that originally generated public interest in it are gone from the scene today and any neutral observer would see this in a moment. Model railroading is a hobby of the Baby Boomer gener...

An interesting outlook, Approachmedium, but nothing more than just personal opinion on your part...the sort of totally unsupported response I pointed out way up-stream as being typical of the sort of baseless posts I see time and again appear in support of a healthy hobby status when the subject of ...

Revisiting this thread I can report that another verifiable indicator of the hobby's current situation regarding failing participation numbers among younger individuals has just come to my attention. In the October 2016 issue of the Model Railroad Hobbyist on-line magazine (readership somewhat over ...

Yes, FLRailFan1, one does see a fair number of "kids" at the big Amherst show. However...most of these are relatively young children brought there (A) through their father's interest in scale model railroading, or tin-plate trains, not specifically the youngster's growing intrest in same, ...

Engineer Spike queries as to how can a modeler possibly complete those very large, often super-detailed, layouts one typically sees in MR in recent years unless by devoting all their off work hours to just endless hours of modeling? I think the answer to that question is quite often to be found some...

Indeed, Bob, based on what I saw in the pages of Model Railroader magazine back in the day pass exchange was a fairly popular aspect among many hobbyists back around the 1950's and 60's, some even going so far as to advertise in the back pages of MR offering to exchange passes. I believe that Al Kal...

today's constant introduction of new models by a number of companies as evidence of the hobby's continuing health, interested me. It is an example of a very common mistake by today's hobbyists, particularly newer members without a truly long association with model railroading, of taking proliferati...

I would hasten to point out that, unlike Lionel; 3-rail, powering 2-rail trackage works quite differently and as a poster above indicates, different manufacturers' switches can work a bit different electrically from one-another. Also to be considered is that depending on the arrangement (separation/...
