the gondola cars are part of the wire train, the scrap wire goes in them. the light fixtures are needed since much of the routine maintenance is done at night.

Final move for SL-II & III cars

About 8:45 this morning the last few IIs & IIIs left Wayne Junction on their way to Woodboure yard. Power for the move was provided by RL-1a 60 and 61ironically running long hood forward. I took a few pictures with my cell phone and if they are half decent I'll up load them tonight. They were se...

Re: BL-15 #50 - Repower

Diesel 50 will be coming back as a 1200hp gen set similar to 70. Two 600hp Cummins diesels will replace the 1500hp Caterpillar prime mover, and a new air compressor (screw type) is also like diesel 70. It was proposed to reconfigure it as a center cab but that was dropped.

Lee me ask this then.... is it due for an emissions upgrade? That was the reason why it was sent out, we got federal money to make it more emissions friendly. The down side is the prime mover must be destroyed as part of the deal. Its a shame, it could have been used to up-grade the 60 or 61 to 150...

The 50 is still waiting to be completed according to the WJ superintendent. I don't know what the issue may be as to why it isn't being worked on.

The pulsing is probably the wheel slip valves opening and closing because the wheels are sliding on wet rails, think ABS system. Don't know what the ringing could be.

The floor plan is for the Pioneer (SL-I), not the IIs. Note the car numbers (151,153,155) on the drawing. The IIs had A/C units on both ends and the toilet was on the opposite side. When they were rehabbed the toilet was removed and the room was where the coupler adaptor and destination signs were s...

The cam controller on the SL-IV has nothing to do with acceleration. It controls dynamic brake resistors, acceleration is controlled by electronic cards. Jerky acceleration happens when a contactor drops out before it should, then closes resulting in surging. The B-4s (cam controlled) use resistors ...

The SPAX 2000 looks like an ex-PC, ex-NYC caboose. Its a crew rider car for MOW use.

We only used high speed drill bits while I was at RedLion and they cut just fine as long as you used cutting oil and low speed. The 'high cycle' drills (and all the electrical power tools) they had would tear your arm off before it would stall but they got very hot if you worked them too long. They ...

As a teenager I worked as an usher at the Goldman theater on 15th street. When the movie let out late on the weekends the el was usually two cars and one had the fare box by the center door. You paid as you entered and if the car was crowded you could cross into the second car but you had to return ...

I think all rail networks should fall under the FRA, a governing body like the FRA stop companies taking major short cuts and putting employees and passenger lives at risk, the FRA has rules and such that companies don't always agree with and some can seem like over kill, but it still for the most ...

At Wayne Junction we have a 'coal track' along the main side of the shop where coal was dumped for the shop heating boilers. The grates and comcrete bunker are still there. And the 'lumber siding' along the Chestnut Hill East line where a freight house was located.

Parlor door, from my understanding, is the door that is opened to allow people to pass between cars, and closed on the fore and aft ends of the consist. An impact might bend the door, or the frame post, causing the door to intrude into the passenger compartment oddly, or be stuck unable to move in ...
