Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

No reason to worry about the tunnels or the bridges below Croton. Those would never get catenary. The extra cost would never be justified and the NIMBYs are going to be too strong against the poles messing up their views of the Hudson. North of Croton is much easier, but it is really dependent on th...

A bridge des not just respond to weight, but to much weight even over bigger base creates a sine wave within bridge structure. and with most bridges on New haven being over 100 year old , there will never be a change. Vibration modes of bridges are always checked with new bridge designs and unless ...

I think we all can agree that the rule produces a nonsensical result for this particular move, but that complying with it is not that big of a deal especially if the owners are paying for the moves. Rewriting the rules just for once-in-a-blue-moon moves like this is a terrible idea. I personally see...

As a passenger there is nothing that irks me more than when they open fewer doors than a platform accommodates. If a platform accommodates only 2 cars, there is obviously no way to open all doors on a five car (or longer) train and I am good with that, but I really get annoyed when I need to carry l...

Saturday they will be moved to Hudson yard for the 2 move staging to pass over metro north. They have a 12 motor limit so they will need to be split and run to new haven motor storage. Excuse the curious, but what is the reason for the 12 motor limit? Something to do with 12 powered cars for EMUs t...

Re: NJT won't meet PTC Deadline

I am a little confused on the PTC testing aspect though. On the one hand it says testing was pushed back from November '19 to May '20; OTOH it says that there is a 17-mile test track on the M&E and that the schedule for testing remains unchanged. What? I am also not 100% sure of the terminology...

It does not matter how much of the mall is open. Even once the whole thing is open there will be no regular rail service between Secaucus and the mall. The Meadowlands extension was designed after Secaucus was built. The lower level at Secaucus has no ability to take frequent shuttles back and forth...

Add me to the people who are amazed that the Sandy money has not been lost under use it or lose it clauses, but maybe someone (I am looking at you, Senators Menendez and Booker) slipped an extension in some reauthorization bill. The Cristie years were simply terrible. While bureaucracy is slow, duri...

There will never be a different weekend schedule until a new tunnel is built under the Hudson. One to three trains bunched up within a few minutes is what is required to allow for weekend maintenance work. That was the way before Sandy. That will remain the way after Sandy. As for just connecting th...

Re: Why doesn't Amtrak have more stations around NYC?

A Sunnyside station is useless for Amtrak. It could have some utility to LIRR and Metro-North, but Amtrak will not gain much from it. If our hypothetical passenger is getting to Sunnyside via LIRR or Metro-North before boarding the Amtrak train to Boston or DC, he could have very well taken the same...

I would not be surprised to see the second express restored once the next three engineer classes graduate by the end of January. That's not to say that this is certain, but once the engineer roster gets a little longer the only issue will be finding the equipment. The equipment in theory is there, i...

I finally have a public source to which I can point. The loop is gone (it has been gone for a while, but I had not seen it confirmed publicly). The $70 million only buys two side platforms and two elevators for ADA access. Anyone who was hoping for the loop will need to wait for another 20+ years an...

Next Board meeting is this Wednesday, November 13th. The only rail related item seems to be the entering in Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the North Brunswick Train station. The Middlesex County Improvement Authority seems to be the lead of the project with total funding sources...

So NJT is looking for ways to move people to and from the mall and held an Innovation Challenge Event. Supposedly they are looking for innovative ideas how to build, operate and finance something to move people between the mall and Secaucus Junction. What exactly do they expect the private industry ...

Earlier this week I observed 4901 in a revenue move trailing a set heading to Hoboken without a cab car behind it. 4906 was observed leading a train out of Hoboken. Looks like that the Metro-North engines are finally getting the PTC gear. Anyone know if all of them have it already?
