Re: Harrison PATH Station -- On Ice?

The space for the 4th Amtrak track through Harrison already exists. From the Google aerials there is a signal hut and some other stuff that will need to be moved to reclaim the space for the track, but it is there including the bridge over Frank E Rodgers Blvd.

lets make it clear chances of Amtrak moving two tracks to one side. and CSX giving up its track and getting space for two commuter tracks on hell gate are way below nill . CSX giving up the track for the right to run freight during the night hours plus $$$ would not surprise me. CSX really seems to...

The Grand Central portion of ESA is not that complex or large to clearly require its own OCC. Given the extra costs of a new OCC, I would certainly expect all dispatching functions for ESA to be added to new personnel at the existing locations, but I do not have first hand knowledge of what is plann...

Do we know if going from 5 cars to 6 cars increased the crew size? I am not familiar with the details of the Amtrak union contract, but if it was 2 cars per crew member, then going from 5 to 6 did not increase the labour cost while adding to the revenue. However going to 7 likely requires an additio...

Going for the economy market, it might be nice to offer cheaper fares over the Empire route than those offered by the existing service. While timewise, one can rationalize the train vs. driving, most fares are only competitive with driving as a party of one; any kind of family outings are way cheap...

they really need not have access to long island , just providing extra space to NJT will free up platforms on north side for LIRR and Amtrak. That is correct, but good luck convincing everyone including the politicians and the voters that building a new gleaming station for NJT just to get the ding...

Safety and egress requirements were different then. Negative on just two. They studied that to death -- a one-...

I am not sure if this is really going to happen. NY state building a new station for NJT and Amtrak? Sounds a little crazy to me. There is no easy way to connect any of the new tracks to the tunnels going east to Long Island, so unless there is an unannounced plan for new East River tunnels, why is ...

If NYSHSR ever gets built it will be in the Hudson Valley. Any attempt to build on the hills on one side or the other are bound to be many times more expensive. Yes, the tunnels are space constrained as are many other spots, but addressing those will be much cheaper than building from scratch. Someo...

"Pooled" equipment and crews is the proper way to run the type of service we have west of Hudson. The issue really is with NJ letting NJT go downhill over the last decade or so with the Cristie years being especially damaging. Metro-North taking over the service away from NJT is unlikely t...

I do not believe that we will see four new tunnels built in the lifetime of anyone currently living. At best two will be built with provisions for the other two to be built at a future date. The money simply is not there for four new tunnels given all other priorities. I am OK with the fact that the...

Flat spot develop when a stopped axle is dragged along the rail. Typical causes are malfunctioning brake on a particular axle or slip-and-slide conditions due to leafs or other substances on the rail. Usually cars with flat spots can be easily identified on a moving train by the banging noise they m...
