Re: C yard, Penn Station

It looks as though C-Yard will be improved as part of the Penn Station Access project. .... At one point in the early study phase of ARC there was discussion of Near Term Alternatives that could be implemented on a shorter time frame than the ultimate tunnel solution. One of the alternatives was an...

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

The best use of the Cutoff is its current use: a right of way preserved for possible use in the future. NJ really has no business paying for rail to be restored in places where the NJ population is minimal and our political system guarantees that PA will never pay for miles and miles of rail to be r...

In my opinion, the best and most attainable second use of the old Acela sets is on the Keystone corridor. I am not saying that it is going to happen, but anyone dreaming of a commuter agency or VIA buying the cars and making all necessary changes to run them needs a meeting with reality. The pluses ...

The proposed stations in Manhattan (59th Street and 125th Street) were never meant for people in Manhattan taking the train to Penn. They were meant as drop-off points for suburban commuters coming from up north. Columbus circle and Columbia University are minor job centers in Manhattan.

People can ask for whatever they want. That does not mean it is going to happen. At this point there is no meaningful way to build a Sunnyside Jct with both MNRR and LIRR trains stopping at it. The possible space for it was gobbled up by ESA, the Westbound bypass and the Eastbound reroute. A station...

Re: Hoosac Tunnel Discussion & News

Does PanAm even have the money to fix the tunnel properly? It is quite clear that they did no preventive maintenance at all. Is NS likely to chip in for the repair? If not, I imagine MassDOT will eventually pay, but with all the bureaucracy it will be a while before anything happens and the temporar...

Yes, I'm sure folks within 100 miles of Manhattan might think Gateway is the most important issue facing the country as far as infrastructure goes, but there folks in 46 other states who might see their own projects as more worthy... New York has invested $13B in terminal improvements at JFK alone,...

This makes one wonder if SEPTA's fleet is destined for the same future. Obviously the engines operate in different environments in terms of speed, distance travelled and stopping patters, but I doubt that SEPTA is better at preventive maintenance. SEPTA's engines are newer though, so they might have...

At this point,3rd rail from DV is NOT cost effective! I do not disagree that it is not cost effective, but cost effective or not the politics of Penn South will require it if Cuomo is serious about building it, which he probably is not. In best of cases he will need another 2 terms as governor befo...

But the procurement for new cars? There will be no new cars on the property for at least another 5 years. It appears that this is either to address some real need (Hartford Line overcrowding?) or just dotting the i-s and crossing the t-s for the actual new car procurement. Someone privier to the Ct...

While I am not big on the NY Daily News, their claims that the bridge fails the qualifications for the Core Capacity grants sound correct to me. As a result I expect that there will be no funds coming for the bridge construction any time soon. Indeed the only way that I could see for the bridge to q...

The tunnel continues to receive medium-low rating making it ineligible for federal funds. The FTA on Tuesday again issued a “medium-low” rating to the tunnel project, still making ineligible federal funding — even if lawmakers can negotiate a budget that provides more funding to the project. Frankly...

The bridge received medium-high rating. Portal Bridge Clears Last Major Hurdle ... The Federal Transit Administration raised the rating on the bridge to medium-high, making it eligible for federal funding. I want to underscore though that just by itself the higher grade does not guarantee federal fu...

No slots are Penn will be transferred from LIRR to NJT. NJT cannot really get more trains through the tunnels, so more slots at the platforms are of no use for them. If Cuomo is serious about building Penn South, which he might not be, there will be more service to Penn from the Hudson Line than jus...

And why are we assuming that NJT has any Comets to spare? That might occur if/when Bombarier delivers the mythical multilevel EMUs, but before then I do not see it. Also aren't the MARC cars already spoken for by the LIRR for this and maybe the next few summers?
