Do not be surprised if the UP steam program (which is actively restoring a big boy) gets cancelled out some time in the semi-near future.

Cowford: Okay I think the difference for me is that I retired with RRB almost ten years after the period in which I was paying into FICA. When they calculate the annuity, they take the last five years of earnings into consideration, all of which were RRB for me. I had way more than enough months of ...

The only red flag I can see (From your limited info in these forums) is that you have had several jobs - Class 2, forklift, USPS... I don;t know your age or how long you stayed at each - but that may be giving them a bit of concern. That's another one of those HR easy/no-brain elimination criteria ...

Railroad retirement's positive qualities are a fairly well-kept secret in this country. I'm okay with keeping it that way, so yeah, it's a total scam.

As with many modern problems, the ultimate solution is multi-faceted. The basic requirement is the political will to overcome the outsized influence of the petroleum lobby.

Hedge fund managers squeeze out the good stuff in short-term gains and leave husks of formerly dynamic, prosperous companies. People like Buffett understand this and build for long-term growth. Others, not so much.

They weren't credited to mine.

And still the Street analysts ask, on quarterly conference calls, "What have you done for me lately?"

The story of the goose and its golden eggs comes to mind.

That's how it works. It's not so much a retirement savings account as it is an insurance policy annuity. Many people get much more out of these systems than they ever put in, by the way. I have about 24 months of FICA that I paid in that I won't get any of through RR Retirement (I am retired from ra...

I doubt if the vest has any relevance to the crew's behavior other than it made your friend easier to see. Train crews are encouraged/required to report trespassers. It's a good policy. In addition, they are subject to random observational testing for rules compliance. My guess is they suspected tha...

HR types are primarily focused on seeing things that will disqualify candidates. It's a negativity-based process designed to weed out people and reduce the number of applicants being considered. When you want to see problems, you see problems, even where they don't exist. The only 21st Century railr...
