Re: Circa 1950 - Class G-43 2-8-0

Does anyone positively know the first NYC #? 1111 was the later system number. I have the NYCL/LSMS power book from 1907 (updated through WW1) but do not have the actual number conversions to the 5700-5800 series. If the renumbering was all a matter of adding a 5 to the number so that 1111 was the 5...

Northern Central/PRR had trackage rights over Erie/EL between Southport and Horseheads from the very beginning. NC/PRR also had much local freight in Horseheads and Elmira and a yard in Elmira off the Erie between 2nd and 5th Streets.

The Tier also had 25 mph and 30 mph speed restrictions in many locations during much of CR's ownership. Even the portions of the line that didn't have speed restrictions topped out at 40 mph. NS under Wick Moorman raised the speed limit on most of the Tier in the mid 2000s. We can talk "coulda...

I have to disagree with the statement that NS halted the Southern Tier decline. It may seem that way in terms of current traffic, but that traffic would probably have developed regardless of the split. NS continued with the single-tracking project on the Tier that was begun by Conrail, including Wav...

Many years later, some of that ROW was used for I-86. I don't know who owned that land in the almost 50 year interim. 'That land' was NYS Route 17. I86 is just an upgraded 17 with improvements here and there to bring it up to interstate standards. Some of the DL&W grade is used for a trail betw...

That basic formula (and there's more to it, like mileage and time on duty) is still used in many places, but newer agreements are in place that do away with some or all of the old ways, just like anything else. Pay rates and their formulas are established by collective bargaining agreements, which a...

Farmall Bob is correct. Green and yellow lights over the Approach sign. Used in dark territory as a distant signal. Does not convey track/occupancy information.

In later years they were used as fuel cars for moving 'user quantities' outlying areas for locomotives and M/W equipment. The last one in existence, I think, was located in Binghamton for many years near the DL&W depot. Was later purchased and moved to Middletown and sat at the M&NJ for a fe...

The seventh day would be a return trip from an away-from-home terminal to get you home. If you're on your 6th day and the trip takes you to an away-from-home terminal, you could either be deadheaded in combined service back to your home terminal on arrival, or, if they need you work a train home, th...

I can't speak to CP's current US office location, but US rail dispatching is required by federal law to be done from the US, and they might occasionally move offices around, but you shouldn't have to worry about the job moving to Canada. Unfortunately, modern computer aided dispatching systems are a...

You're right. No wonder I couldn't place it on DL&W. The signals were a bit of confusion. The slide was in with a series of pics around Wilawana, PA around the time track was being 'rationalized', so I assumed he had been somewhere further east looking at his old territory. This one is definitel...

gptra_0002.jpg Just catching up on a few old slides - can anyone ID this location? It's DL&W mainline, somewhere between Elmira and Delaware water gap. Slide was unlabeled, taken by my grandfather in the 60s - post merger, so it shows single-tracking, but I haven't figured out exactly where. G.
