Photo Location

Anyone have an idea of the location or RR info for this? Scan from a photo I picked up at a New England auction. My guess is late 1850s or very early Civil War based on equipment and dress. I have scanned it to 1200dpi and cannot find any legible information. There is relatively simple striping on t...

You can use dynamic on operable units - the middle/non-equipped unit just won't do anything but idle when you switch to braking.

The radios are for communication and positioning information. The tracks are still circuited, so yes, a broken rail would be detected. I have yet to see anything that said a rail was broken in SWC incident, just displaced, so PTC would not have helped.

Thanks for those old pics. Lots of track reconfiguring at some point. Now I know why there's such a sharp bend in the East Leader. It does look like the pocket track was used for swapping cars at least, as the East Leader and pocket tie directly to the WB main right there west of the bridge (with a ...

All three shots are the same location (within 1000'). In the last pic you can see the remains of the depot platform. That's Orcutt Creek bridge in the passenger train pic and Wilawana Road (4022) is the crossing. The passenger train pic is a bit earlier I think, but Wilawana was long gone as a stati...

A few pics from spring 1976, IIRC. Anyone know why the space/track configuration between the East Leader and W/B main next to the W/B cab track?

Not West Albany. Power house had two stacks and no L-shaped buildings like that.

Amtrak does have servicing available at NiaFalls, and all terminating Amtrak trains to the Falls turn on the Tuscarora Wye (CP-21/CP-69/CP-22), usually on the way in. Generally speaking, passenger trains are no longer allowed through Frontier due to liability issues although years ago we did it when...

I'm sure that the harsher ride fell on deaf ears. Not really. Rough riding locos are a source of back injuries. If you've ever been on one that seriously 'bottomed out' or constantly jarred you with a hard/fast spring on rough track you know what I mean. Changing out springs during a thorough class...

I'd say the biggest reason affecting Kenmore is the coal traffic. IIRC, NRG is slated to close, so there will be no more road trains (empty hoppers) originating there and no reason to have a car department and air plant on site. Kenmore outbound local traffic can get a transfer test to get to Fronti...

There was a derailment a couple miles south of Montour high up on the bank - IIRC a couple of loaded boxcars and a hopper went into the woods around the time of the '75 washout. They laid there down the bank for years and may still be there (might have been buried in place). That was pretty much the...

That kind of failure description usually refers to broken pistons/rods or crankshafts. When a piston rod or piston fails, the rod can go sideways and punch a hole through the block, throwing metal, fuel and oil all over. It can be spectacular, but not if you're standing on the running boards when it...
