Went off to Oneonta to catch the train which was scheduled for 4:15 at the Gas Ave. crossing. As I entered Oneonta from the west, I noticed the Holiday Train creeping up the 'wrong' main to get around a Binghamton bound train waiting for clear track. It looked good for my planned shot of the train c...

There is a story about the arrival of the RF-16s that involved them being refused by some uninformed employee. Seems the higher-ups traded an equal amount of RR scrap [ possibly boxcars?] in exchange for the RF-16s. When the Baldwins showed up in interchange, no one could believe where they were con...

I have been attending most of the last ten years and I think the vendor count was down quite a bit. Still the best show in NY in my opinion, but a definate drop in vendors, maybe as high as 15%. They were spread out much more than in the past which makes it easier to see the tables. Also the amount ...

A general comment. Just because the button shows a train, that does not mean it originated from a RR. Stock artwork of popular subjects were often cataloged and offered to the general public. Trains were some of the most modern and exciting subjects around at the time. Back in that time period, anyo...

Yes, the line was used for high and wide shipments and detours until the completion of the rebuild of Belden Tunnel. After that, the line was torn out toward the end of the Guilford era . In many places, even the ballast was removed for reuse elsewhere. There is still plenty to see along the old rig...

Scotty,

Virtual Earth images are satellite imagery, not photos from airplanes.

Still it would have been nice to see a matched set of three in fresh yellowjacket paint..............

You are developing business in NY and NJ and want the advice of railfans on the internet? That is either very brave or extremely foolish.

He is talking about the Utica dead line. The Cartier unit is probably 77. The stripped unit could have been a GE thats been there several years.

While that is a nice find in excellant condition, I would take issue with calling it NOS. From the looks of the box, you could not claim it has never been operated. If there is any evidence that the loco has been operated on rails, it would NOT be NOS. I would caution you against using that term, es...

I think a look at the history of the U&D may give a hint. If I remember correctly, The original plan for the U&D was to build out of Stamford toward Oneonta through Harpersville and Davenport. The people of Harpersville even raised a considerable amount of money for the RR. However at some p...

The first picture shows quite a bit of rust streaking already. i dont see any. rust, only ice on it in on any picture The image is pretty clear. There are certainly streaks of rust already under the class lights. I just hope the paint stands up. http://img303.imageshack.us/img303/117/class9co.jpg

HoggerKen, I will stand by my estimate a bit longer. Primer sealer leaves that semigloss finish. Yes those decal kits are expensive, but without the required amount of reflective surface the unit can not legally be used. Last, painting a unit is a $10k to $15k cost. Even if the work was done under c...

The Schenectady NY Alco plant made M3,M4 and M36 tanks. M7 tank destroyers. Steam and petrol engines for the Brits. Bomb forgings and turret parts for the US Navy. Over 1 billion dollors in war supplies. And with it's close proximity to the U. S. Army's Watervliet Arsenal, it's possible that several...
