CSX now has a dedicated container shuttle service running between NYC and BAL. Started up earlier this week. That'll help keep some of the drayage drivers working, not sure what the longshoreman and stevedores will do. Based on what the ACOE posted today as an overview of next steps, that shuttle wi...

Rode out a couple high 4's and a 5.2 in a Tokyo high-rise on a five day trip once. Still gives me the willies thinking about it.

Funny you mention United. Last summer their Mt. Prospect campus (sold in 2022) was demolished to make room for new data center buildings. Turns out the site is well suited for lots of internet and power redundancy because of the data center United used to how there (a new one was built on a carved o...

I'm sure we will be structuraldemolition.net over the next month or three as well....

Discussing adjacent spaces within transportation and logistics seems to be a reasonable accommodation.

I think the strength requirements have increased, as ten high seems common on the newer container ships. They're lashed to the catwalk frames and pinned within the stack, which offers some bracing that wouldn't normally wouldn't be present on land. And yes, they do load heavier cans deeper in the ho...

The Carnival Legend's capacity is only 2100. Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas is 2500 guests. That's my idea of a perfect size for a cruise, but the real reason they used the smaller ships *was* the FSK Bridge.... the 3000+ guest ships couldn't fit underneath it. Having taken more than a few cru...

I was looking at a nautical chart.. North of the 1200ft spans and under the concrete bridge spans it's a 20 ft draft. Some traffic could move thru there at high tide, especially if empty and lightly fueled.

That's been around for decades. A bunch of heavyweights and some newer cars.

That's not a shock to anyone paying attention to state and municipal budgets elsewhere. And if there's no steps being taken to get away from defined benefits vs a retirement account for newer employees, it's only going to get worse. Metra and Amtrak have always shown ridership in their annual report...

No way it's a couple of weeks. I was talking to my brother-in-law who works for what I presume is one of Tadman's competitors, and he said 90 days at a minimum. Getting the equipment staged and other planning to start the demolition is going to take 4 to 8 weeks alone. The divers and other experts n...

Noted in another group. Seaports received 2.25 billion in the Biden infrastructure bill. Amtrak received 2.1 billion. One of those keeps the economy moving, the other is an oversized train set for politicians. Something tells me the economic impact of the port being closed will be in the billion-dol...

Sadly there's no other Maryland port. I am glad that it did hit the Key Bridge and not the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. As bad as it is now, I would think it would be much much worse if the CBB got hit and collapsed. CBB would be worse for the general public, but because of the tunnels under the shipping...

Condolences to the families of the workers killed... This isn't the first tragedy like this -- the Sunshine Skyway bridge, of very similar design, was lost in 1980 for the same general cause. 30+ people died if I remember, and the new bridge has concrete bollards (called dolphins) which better prote...

I'm guessing that guarantee assumes the newer cars are used as cabs. That's not much different from other heavy rail operators. TRE and other Herzog operations have the mini-highs positioned for the cab cars because that's where the conductor is most likely to be when stopped. Metra only guarantees ...
