John, whatever happened to the ASB Bridge across the Missouri River? My recollections from nearly 50 years ago was that this was a combined rail (lower level) and vehicle (upper level) bridge. Is it gone? I made a lot of round trips using it as my future bride lived in N. Kansas City, and I was stat...

Wait for a snowy day, and ride out to Port Jefferson and back. Nearest thing we've got to "mountain railroading" on the LIRR.

My recollection from "being there" is that it and all LD trains arrived on the west end of the station tracks (the "arrival station") and made the loop to Mott Haven.

Tommy, being Italian-American, I've heard pretty much all the jokes about place names ranging from why so many Italian men are named Tony to and including the mispronouncing of Norfolk, Virginia with NSFW results!

Thought from the thread title that there was a railroad bridge across Long Island Sound that I didn't know about. Sound Beach is a community on the north shore of Long Island where I spent several summers enjoying my uncle's summer home during the late 50's. Is there also a Sound Beach along the CT ...

Well, it was more of an "uber" first class, but I recall that the Long Island Rail Road had private club cars at the rear of many of its commuter trains plying the Oyster Bay branch. This would have been 1950's, 1960's, up to whenever. Lots of old money on the North Shore of Long Island, a...

Sorry to hear that. Noel strikes me as being one of the most knowledgable people on this board, especially regarding operations "back in the day." This Floridian, nee New Yorker, sends healing vibes and prayers his way. Get well soon, Noel!

Re: LIRR train lengths, any with 14 cars?

I could be wrong, but I recall that Ronkonkoma train no. 272 which originated HPA around 5:22 pm had 14 cars behind a 2400-series diesel as it made its Deer Park stop around 6:30 every night. Used to take my son down to the station in the early 70's to watch it pull in.

I don't have any suggestions either, but I'll be taking a course on land use and urban transportation next semester. I'll let all of you know if I find a good cross-spectrum look at commuter rail, whether American/Canadian or worldwide. I don't know if any of his ideas were committed to writings, b...

As to question no. 1, I found this at another website, so not responsible for the accuracy: "The train set deadheaded via the Buffalo Line to Newberry Jct, then north on the Corning Secondary to hit the Chicago Line at Lyons. Then east to Albany then down the Hudson. I remember seeing a newspap...

Reasonably certain that during the early 50's, pairs of DD-1's in PRR and LIRR service would have still been on the property. Of course, the GG-1 would have been the big boy on the block, and the DD's were being phased out.

"New York Central Railroad" by Solomon/Schafer is a good one with plenty of photos. It might still be available in libraries (you remember those, right?).

GG-1's were beasts. There were plenty of stretches where they hit 100 routinely back in the PRR day.

Pretty much pot luck, I guess. I know there's a S/B freight that passes through Belleview (N of Wildwood) around 8:30 every night.

Wildwood is a good news/bad news deal. The good news is that you might catch the Tropicana juice train. The bad news is no passenger service for the last 10 years. Lots of "S"-line freight activity, though.
