"red-orange line" Today at around 6:15 I had got off the green line which consisted of Breda Rehabs to go to the lower level. As I approached the escalators I saw a train on the Vienna/Franconia-Springfield track which at first I thought it was the 5000 series. I took a closer look and sa...

"modorney" …First of all, Metro hires you first as a bus driver, then, after 2 or 3 years you can bid for train operator… That's not totally true. A friend of mine that retired as a supervisor back in 2002 told me that one can go from hiring on a bus operator to bidding for a train operat...

"realtype" Take a look at this: http://mlis.state.md.us/2007RS/fnotes/bil_0001/hb0681.pdf Bill requiring MARC service to Elkton by June 2010 Pretty much meaningless. The bill had it's first reading before the Environmental Matters Committee in the House of Delegates and a hearing was held...

"rail10" I will like to update on the metrorail speed control why metrorail chose automatic train protection rather than trip arms? The trip arm dates to beginning of the last century. AC track circuits came shortly thereafter. The state of the art in the 1960s gave us the ability to use ...

"SemperFidelis" That line is an old electrified line (PRR) from Harrisburg, running along the north bank of the Susquehanna River, connecting to the Northeast Corridor. I forget the technical name of the line under PRR ownership. Columbia and Port Deposit, commonly identified as the "...

"njt/mnrrbuff" I didn't even know that Pennsy signals were changing. CSX has been changing signals on their property wholesale as well as on former Conrail property for some time now. I know for a fact that a third track is going to be built on CSX rails through DC ending at the Potomac R...

"RailMike" I heard once that the DC Metrorail cars were hauled (by highway, ironically) to the Amtrak shops in Beech Grove, IN for service. Perhaps that's where the Baltimore Metro cars are repaired also? The Breda car contract US final assembly was done at Amtrak’s shops in Beech Grove I...

-In DC, they are replacing the old Pennsy Light Position for newer signals.

The changing out of the amber Pennsy Position Light signals began many years ago.

As I recall the Rohr cars came in around $3/4 million a piece when they were built. I have know idea what the going rate at that time was for stainless steel cars of similar size. Rohr's profit on their transit products was not all that great. Unlike Breda, Rohr had no problems with the vendors that...

"VikingNik" DC also had an extensive trolley/streetcar system that was closed down with the promise of Metrorail being built. There was quite a gap between closing and the start of construction though. Actually that's not totally true. There were a number of proposal to build a trolley su...

100 Years of Capital Traction by LeRoy O. King Jr. states that the two rail conduit system was used to prevent electrolyses damage to nearby buried iron pipes from stray current. A neat little feature to the two rail system was that the hot and return currents could be swapped between rail when stra...

Ah, thank you. There wouldn't happen to be a bus that has stops at both?

Here is the listing of Regional transit providers in the Washington DC region at wmata.com.

I was just wondering if the VRE station is the same as the Amtrak station at Lorton. If not, how far are they from each other?

No

VRE Lorton is north of Amtrak Lorton.

The VRE station is located on Lorton Station Boulevard at the top of this google hybird map.
