If I understand this right, both NP and DSS&A had lines between Duluth and Ashland, and DSS&A abandoned theirs in favor of trackage rights over the NP in the 1930s. Anyone know why the NP had a line to Ashland in the first place? Another question arises. What towns did this section of DSS&am...

Being a geography geek, I can't even imagine my life without Google Maps anymore. It may be the single best resource available to the "armchair railroad archaeologist." Once you develop an eye for abandoned railways, there isn't much you can't find. Of course, you need to know what to look...

Milwaukee Road... Savanna to Dubuque, IA. Dubuque to St Paul, MN. Something about that doesn't seem right. St. Paul to Dubuque is too far, and Dubuque to Savanna is too short. Rather than Dubuque, I believe the correct crew change point on this route is Marquette, Iowa , across from Prairie du Chie...

Yep, and it's that Pennsy control of both N&W and Wabash that is one of railroading's great tragedies. I don't know with whom N&W should have merged, but Wabash had better options. N&W had that coal money, but that's it. The Wabash line to Buffalo (and this is also true for Nickel Plate)...

No particular comments, but it's a very interesting piece of information!

As for the paint scheme, I don't like the yellow. It looks weird.

True. But was that really such a big deal? The BRC served pretty much everyone.

I've always figured that if two railroads really want to connect in Chicago, they'll find a way! And it won't be a big deal. That's the whole point of Chicago, no?

Holy crap. That's...impressive. Did you make that? Say, what's the deal with these "light tracks" and "loaded tracks"? I would assume these "gravity railroads" have something to do with hauling large volumes of heavy coal back in the day. How did this system work, and w...

I've long been interested in the Anthracite Coal Region, and have spent much time looking at the area on Google Maps and Bing Maps. As many of your know, it's easy to see that the region is covered in visible and mostly abandoned (some so long ago, they're just barely visible) right-of-ways, curving...

Hey all. I'm wondering how (and when) the Lehigh Valley got to Philly, and where it went within the city limits. I assume it had trackage rights over Reading, but any information about LV in Philly is pretty tough to find. How was business there? Were there docks? When did service there end? Did any...

There's another bandit, a switcher, that can be found around Pig's Eye. It's been a while since I've seen it, but not that long. I seem to recall seeing it serving the Ford plant.

My great-grandfather was a MILW sectionman in Caledonia. All the information put forth by you guys is pretty accurate! Mention was made earlier of an iron mining operation. That was before my time, but it took place near Spring Valley, MN on the CGW line that used to run south out of Rochester. It a...

This is a very interesting question, one that I've never pondered until now. I suspect that mtuandrew is on the right track about that bankruptcy being a major turnoff. That kind of thing can be a major headache for another company to inherit. It seems to me that when one looks through railroad hist...

It certainly would have been a regional powerhouse, but it still could only have survived in that form for a few years. Come Conrail in 76, they would have lost all friendly connections east of Buffalo. However, had a NKP/WAB system been around in the 70s, they most certainly would have gotten the ...
