Re: "Natural"/obvious mergers.

Why didn't the L&NE and the Susquehanna merge? With a deepwater port in New York harbor, the cement plants (and earlier, the anthracite collieries) served by L&NE could ship their product worldwide. Additionally, northeastern Jersey could have had a simpler freight connection to the Maybroo...

Here's the bigger question for me: Why didn't the L&NE and the Susquehanna MERGE?? With a deepwater port in New York harbor, the cement plants (and earlier, the anthracite collieries) served by L&NE could ship their product worldwide. Over eighteen miles of the L&NE main was trackage rig...

Well, first off, nobody really knows (or cares) what they do or what they're called. I know that may come as a surprise to many foamers out there, but most railroaders don't really know all the intricate details of specific locomotive models the way foamers do. I had to google "SD30C-eco" ...

If this is true about CP selling their SD60s, I'd believe it. Not because that makes sense, but because it doesn't . That's Canadian Pacific. Occasionally, these SD60s make their way onto the DM&E. They're always welcomed. Here on the DM&E, we have crap. Absolute crap. Our SD40s have been ru...

Here's another interesting option for Chicago & Northwestern to reach Kansas City in the 60's: Wabash . Once again, the interesting position of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway under C&NW comes to light. At Albia, Iowa, M&StL made an important connection to the Wabash. In fact, th...

And for the sake of this thread's discussion, who should C&NW have targeted instead, considering they wanted KC access badly? Interesting question. It's a matter of perspective. From another interesting discussion ... Ben Heinemann was the Darth Vader of Granger Railroads (can I say that here?)...

Now, in other discussions, the same guy that worked hard to divert all KC traffic from the CGW line to the Spine Line (Ed Burkhardt) claimed that at the time abandoning the CGW line across Illinois was a mistake...but that was only because at that time in the early 70s, the CGW was in good shape wh...

Here's a map covering the turf they shared. Rock Island is in red, Milwaukee Road in orange, and Illinois Central in green. The map shows the systems circa 1967 and is exact in its positions and shapes. I'm curious as to why you're curious about these three railroads intersecting... MILW-RI-IC map.J...

Hehe...yeah, I dunno. I also hear the government won't let the Pierre-Rapid City (PRC) section go abandoned because of the few grain elevators that are out there. So who the hell knows what's going on? It's exhausting to think about this stuff sometimes. All I know is that if Tracy West gets sold, W...

There isn't really any potential online traffic on the MILW past Chamberlain, is there? Not that there's anything on the DM&E west end either, but it's worth asking.
Besides Rapid City itself, nothing. Absolutely nothing. It's just...a great void out there.

I work on the DM&E. Here's what I can say for certain: The rumor mill is the only well-oiled machine. But isn't the small yard at Tracy usually full of cars for Tracy Cement and ergo would require the addition of a couple more tracks for interchange purposes? The Tracy yard is very small, and a ...

Regarding the H&D, I meant that traffic that didn't need to stop in the Twin Cities would be able to bypass Short Line Hill and the yards at Pig's Eye and Southtown. It does make sense that everything would stop in Minneapolis or St. Paul though, especially since the H&D wasn't built to a h...
