Thanks for the photo, Littlefoot. I don’t know how it will turn out, but it looks like we will soon have a final resolution of a 15 year old discussion topic!

Please keep us posted, with or without photos.

It's unfortunate that there are no convenient connections between Amtrak and the Adirondack Scenic. If you are coming from the west and if you want to ride the all-day Adirondack Scenic trip from Thendara to Utica and back, you can arrive in Utica on Amtrak 280 at 8:01 AM, for the Scenic departure ...

Also, if you like craft beer, Baggs Square Brewing is right across the street from Union Station in Utica. They offer some food selection as well.

You are right about the volatility of the LSL schedule. I'd stick with the Empire Service trains. 284 will get you to Syracuse about 10:00 AM, leaving plenty of time to explore.

Agree it was a nice historical feature, but things like that also become a magnet for graffiti and a possible safety hazard if it leads people to try and jump on top of it. There is a similar abutment in the old Erie Canal near Fayetteville, where the NYC Chenango branch once crossed the canal. That...

As more material is dumped, the material dumped on top continuously increases the pressure on the material below, effectively compacting the earth as it goes. I imagine once all the fill is in and the vibration of passing trains is added, there will continue to be a small amount of settling that con...

Status of the rehab project at this point: 1. All replacement mainline ties have been installed and spiked (88,000+) 2. Ballast has been dropped to around MP 81 (just north of Beaver River). Not sure how far north the resurfacing crew got, but they are well north of Big Moose. 3. Siding in Beaver Ri...

As part of their convention in Albany this year, the New York Central System Historical Society is having a train show on Sunday, May 15th, at the Crowne Plaza Albany. You can see more about the convention and the show at https://nycshs.org/ . You will need to scroll down just a bit to see the secti...

It’s the O&W, just north of Sidney. The nearly identical photograph (sans caption) is on page 374 in John Taibi’s book “Remembering the New York, Ontario & Western Railway - Oswego to Sidney and Branches.” That’s the Unadilla River on the left hand side.

That description is basically accurate per John Taibi’s recent book “Silver Rails”. It is the former bunkhouse and was moved away from the right of way when the NYC sold it in 1962. I believe it still exists, though don’t know that for certain.

Sounds high - I have heard more like $1 or $2 per day per car. But I'm sure there are many factors that cause the precise rate to go up or down, including location, security of the location, how quickly the cars can be retrieved, etc.

It has never operated in the 14 years I have worked on the railroad. My understanding is that it (and one or two other FL9s) were given to the railroad in the early 2000's as part donors for their other F units. New York State DOT prohibits six axle locomotives on their track north of Remsen, so the...

Rail removal started today, just north of Tupper Lake, proceeding northward.

I apologize if I missed it but what is going on with the north end? Did they remove the rails? Any equipment still up there? As far as I know, the rails between Tupperware Lake and Lake Placid are still there, but it looks like their days are numbered. All equipment was taken out of Lake Placid in ...
