Re: LIRR Union Negotiations Hit Dead End

As a retired member of TWU Local 100 I'm totally dismayed by the actions of the current local president and executive board. The local should have waited for the LIRR negotiations to conclude before taking on the transit worker's contract. I, personally, would have let the presidential panel set the...

The Pilgrim Spur is west of the Sagtikos and yes the NYA does store some cars north of the mainline in the spur. The track follows the fencing around the east end of the Heartland Golf course, not the adjacent Heartland driving range. I also drive through the area and if you take Long Island Avenue ...

Car washes, New car deliveries, and work trains also use the line from time to time. The line is also used for access to Linden shop.

The IRT, BRT/BMT, and the later IND all have blind bellmouths in different places in the system. They were usually in preparation for future expansions that never came to fruition for one reason or another. In the case of the BRT and DeKalb Avenue/ Manhattan Bridge I think one must look a few blocks...

Tool, interesting that you should comment on the reams of SOP's already in place as it relates to a general lack of competence. One of my supervisors told us years ago that you could throw away the whole rule-book and replace it with 3 words: "Use common sense". Touche! They told us the s...

Regarding the NYCTA subway, for many years there was a title of conductor-in-charge. I still have my old rule book and he WAS in charge of the train, not the motorman or today's train operator. He was also taught signals and how to "read the iron", so to speak so a reverse move could be do...

Thanks for the quick reply and info. If I stay in town or come back soon I'll try to take a look around up there. Being a New Yorker and a transit worker it does bother me somewhat that the restored depot is adjacent to the police station so maybe I'll find out when the next open house is first.

Restoration Question

I happened to be in North Carolina Thursday afternoon, just south of Fayetteville. I was driving on NC 71 and came across crossing gates in a town called Parkton. It just so happened that the Palmetto was passing by heading south so I watched and waited. When the train finally cleared and the gates ...

That's for the Dyre line but I'd guess there's one based in Brooklyn for the Sea Beach and Brighton-Franklin lines also.

I've operated the Dyre #5 line for years. What you describe is a single track shuttle with one train on the entire line. A reverse move is something else entirely.

How many daily commuters use the Jitney? As mentioned before in other threads, daily commuters east of Ronkonkoma and along the North Fork are rare. what about stations like Medford, Yaphank, and Riverhead, thats not totally far out there as far as commuter service. They are still west of Speonk wh...

I know that at least one subway train was reversed at the time of the 2001 World Trade Center attack. Police Officer Miriam Delgado of the Stamford, Ct. Police Department was on a train heading to court on her day off. All of a sudden, the tunnel was filled with incredible smoke and an approaching ...

And all the time I thought the LIRR was a cut above those of us in NYCT. It seems the MTA "disease" effects all of those at the top nowadays. It must be spreading.
