Perhaps the rail, tie replacements are the reason for the traffic tie up in Brentwood this afternoon. At approximately 3:30 PM I was headed s/b on Washington Avenue on my way to Bay Shore. Approaching Suffolk Avenue/Brentwood Rd there was an MTA police car blocking the intersection and beyond that t...

I noticed that for the next two weekends buses will replace trains between Ronkonkoma and Hicksville. Been riding this branch before it was electrified so I guess two more weekend outages won't be the end of the world. Been looking at the old Brentwood station and I, too, wonder what's going to happ...

What exactly is the status of the double track project today ? I mistakenly believed that the project was completed and that more service would be provided between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale. That the approximately 3 hour gap westbound on weekday afternoons would be finally eliminated. I don't see ...

In my youth (1990-2008) so much has changed, obviously due to technology and technological upgrades, but it also needed to be done. The Ronkonkoma Branch of my youth is somewhat changed because for a long time I was hoping they would double-track it and I could see it. Seeing Wyandanch the way it i...

Was just at Brentwood station parking lot and noticed a work consist east of the switch. It appears that there is a second track laid down next to the existing trackage although it's not connected to the main yet. The new track has the consist of a " Rail King " unit and 3 or 4 hoppers fro...

I wonder if Nassau tower and/or an eastbound train alerted that westbound train to the situation at Mineola ahead of time. There seems to be more to the story than what's been reported I'm just speculating because the whole story seems incomplete to me

I can recall leaving a NYCT training class in the Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street subway complex with a few other TA employees about 10 years ago. A few of us, M/M, T/Os, and an instructor were heading eastbound so we boarded the railroad at FBA and walked up to the engineer's car. He engaged us in c...

I've had occasion to use that track when I worked IRT-IND transfers. Coming from Concourse Yard heading toward 207th Yard if there was congestion around 125th St-St. Nick we'd frequently be sent southbound and that spur was an easy, out of the way spot to turn a SMEE transfer. The next out of the wa...

I spent most of my NYCT career on the Dyre Avenue 5 line going back to the early '80s. I have looked at the ROW from the old section south of East 180th St to the layup tracks north of Dyre Avenue. I've talked to older relatives who used the old railroad to go to New Rochelle back in the '30s as wel...

I think the red Chevy Impala is a 1959 model looking at the body style. The '65 Impala had a more subdued front end .

Getting back to the automatic train stop question the OP asked about. I went to the LIRRhistory.com site and checked the joint BRT-LIRR service pages. There is a brief explanation of the 5th Avenue-LIRR joint service to Brooklyn Bridge as well as a few pictures of the connection. That's the only rea...

Doc is talking about a connection with the subway and the LIRR at Atlantic Avenue-Flatbush Terminal. As a Brooklynite and a retired motorman for NYCT I know the exact location he's speaking about and have also heard the stories about August Belmont and his private rail car. I've never actually seen ...

Didn't the BRT/ BMT and the LIRR have interchanges in Brooklyn before the 1940's ? IIRC they shared trackage to Park Row over the Brooklyn Bridge around Flatbush Avenue, trains to Williamsburgh connecting on Atlantic Avenue in East New York, and a long ago Franklin Avenue connection toward Prospect ...
